CHS To Host 1st Round Of State Tourney Friday

Even if the Commerce Tigers’ season ends in the first round of the state playoffs Friday night, the boys have made their mark this season.

Monday night, Commerce won the region title over Athens Christian. The 67-56 victory handed the Tigers’ their first region title in over 30 years.

The Tigers will start the state Class A playoffs by hosting Our Lady of Mercy (OLM) on Friday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
OLM is the fourth seed from 5-A after falling to Southwest Atlanta Christian on Monday.

The region championship comes on top of the Commerce boys going undefeated at home in their new gym, including a regular-season upset of Jefferson to break a decade-long losing streak.

Coach Chad Bridges said going undefeated at home was a great way to open the gym, adding “I am so proud of all of these young men. We are thankful for all the support we have received this year.”

Next year, the Tigers will likely start their season in the same gym, but transition to the new pit-style gym as the new CHS opens after Christmas. The gym currently used will be relegated to a practice facility.

Commerce led up to the region championship title game by defeating Prince Avenue and Social Circle last week.
