Mat Panthers take sixth at state

Austin McDonald fell just short of a medal, losing in the conso-quarters, one round before placing. Jamari Davis was able to advance to the quarterfinals but then lost two tough matches to the eventual third and sixth place finishers.

Other wrestlers who had good showings included Justin Brewer, who went 2-2 and Tre’ Horton who went 2-2 as well, giving the eventual state champion a tough two-point match in the second round of the tournament.

Zach Moore went 1-2 in the tournament. Ryan Shekey went 0-1. Daivon Ledford went 0-1.

“Coming into this weekend I said that as long as our wrestlers accomplished their individual goals then the team would be OK,” said coach Jason Powers. “However, a couple of our wrestlers fell short of their goals and thus we fell short of our team goal of a top four finish as well.”
Powers said it was a great accomplishment to finish sixth in AAA this season with so many good teams.

“I am very proud of our team this year as we competed very well all year long. We came up short of our goal of a top four finish, but we’ll just have to go to work even harder to ensure that we achieve our goals next year.”
