Lady Wildcats' historic season ends

The Apalachee High School Lady Wildcats were playing without one of their top weapons Monday night in the opening round of the Region 8-AAAA tournament and it proved costly.

Competing without senior Porshia Cleveland, AHS fell to Rockdale County 78-62. The loss ended the Lady Wildcats season but not before Michael Parks’ team recorded a program record 10 victories.

“Rockdale is very big and very athletic,” Parks said. “We do not match up well against them. Their size really hurt us on the boards and with easy scores. Our girls played very hard and forced a ton of turnovers but we could not convert them into points at times.”

AHS made a run in the fourth quarter getting to within nine points, but Rockdale County was able to hold on for the win.

“We had a good season and really improved as a basketball team,” Parks said. “We just need to increase our work ethic in the offseason in order to compete in this tough region.”

Lacreasha Mayweather led the Lady Wildcats with 23 points and eight rebounds Monday, Saboyce Shelton added 15 points and 11 rebounds. Aliya Ballard added 11 points.
As a team, AHS forced 46 turnovers.

The Lady Wildcats complete the 2009-2010 season with a 10-15 record. AHS entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed.
