The Lady Panthers of Jackson County wrapped up regular season play this week and now begin to focus on region tournament play.
JCCHS will open up postseason play by hosting Mountain View today (Wednesday).
Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
A win will allow the Lady Panthers to face Franklin County on Thursday.
Hart County
Coming off a victory on Feb. 5 over Oconee County, the Lady Panthers were hoping to carry some momentum with them through the end of the season.
They played host last Tuesday to the Lady Bulldogs of Oconee County.
While Hart County took control early, the Lady Panthers worked hard to stay in contention. Jackson County trailed by six points at the half, and was down by six again by the end of the third quarter.
But any chance they had to make a charge in the final eight minutes of the game seemed to slip away, as Hart County stretched out to a 10 point advantage, one that they would hold through the end of the game. At the final buzzer, the Lady Bulldogs won 59-49.
Ashley Skelton led in scoring with 14 points. Victoria Fontana scored 13.
“Overall, it was a pretty good game,” said coach Chad Pittman. “I just felt like we didn’t play with as much intensity and didn’t execute down the stretch. We only scored seven in the fourth quarter. If we had had a stronger finish, then the game might have been a little bit different.”
Pittman said the game really came down to the last few minutes.
“We didn’t execute and the ball didn’t go in the basket, so we didn’t fare on the wining side,” Pittman said. “It was still a pretty good effort.”
Franklin County
After being delayed a few days by weather, the Lady Panthers finally traveled to Franklin County on Monday to close out their regular season with a pairing against the Lady Lions.
Jackson County had nothing to lose in the game, but knew that a win could deny Franklin County the number one seed going into the region tournament.
The game ended up being one of the closest games of the season for the Lady Panthers. It was a back and forth affair from the beginning, with Jackson County leading at the half 35-33. The game remained close through the second half, and would end tied at the end of 32 minutes. It would stay close in overtime, but the Lady Lions would get the final edge they needed off of a free throw with 5 seconds remaining to win 59-58.
Bree Drew led the Lady Panthers in scoring with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Victoria Fontana scored 13 points on the night.
