The inclement weather seen all over the northern part of the state last week has thrown scheduling for the final two events in high school wrestling forward and, in turn, backwards as well.
With the state sectionals having to be cancelled, that means that the State Championships, scheduled for this weekend at the Gwinnett Arena, will now revert back to its previous four-day format.
Last week, the state sectionals, including those scheduled to be held at Jefferson High School, were pushed back to Monday and Tuesday of this week due to the threat of winter weather. The further threat meant the cancellation of the sectionals outright, with the state tournament now going back to its old format at the Gwinnett Arena.
Weigh-ins are slated to take place on Wednesday, with wrestling scheduled to begin Thursday. The finals will be held on Saturday.
Defending state champ Jefferson will be going to Gwinnett Wednesday looking for another victory. All 14 Mat Dragons that competed in the region tournament qualified for state competition. A win would be the 10th straight state traditional title for the Jefferson.
The Mat Dragons heading for state competition include Kyle Springer, Cason Thurmond, Kelly Isaac, Cutler Finch, Cain Finch, Wayne Elliott, Jake Sherman, Forrest Przybysz, Lucas Redd, Zack Allen, Clay Richardson, Jace McColskey, Daniel Barber and Sam Loggins.
In Class A, Commerce brought home the area championship on Tuesday, 10 points over the favored Wesleyan wrestlers.

Meanwhile, the Mat Panthers of Jackson County have most of their team heading for state competition as well, with 10 wrestlers qualifying two weekends ago at the area tournament in Morgan County.
That number tied a school record for most Area Champions in a single year with four.
Those going to Gwinnett to compete include Ryan Howe, Izzy Carillo-Garcia, Jamari Davis, Charles Smothers, Ryan Shekey, Austin McDonald, Zach Moore, Justin Brewer, Tre’ Horton and Daivon Ledford.
Five wrestlers from East Jackson qualified to take part in this weekend’s state tournament. The Mat Eagles placed fifth two weeks ago in the area tournament at Riverside Military Academy.
