The Raider wrestlers headed for the hills — literally — to get some valuable summer experience.
Madison County recently attended July 15-18 camp at Appalachian State, located in the mountainous region of Western North Carolina (in Boone, N.C.), along with a host of other schools.
The event featured over 900 high school wrestlers and 180 junior high school competitors on 36 mats.
“If you’ve ever seen a gym with 36 mats … it’s enormous,” fifth-year head coach Richie Houston said.
Madison County’s Max Nash went 11-1 in the junior high school ranks to place second in the tournament. None of the high school competitors placed in the tournament, but several held their own on the mat.
