AHS to host traditional area duals

Wrestlers from both the Apalachee High School and Winder-Barrow High School programs are looking to finish high enough at this weekend’s area tournament to advance to state sectionals.

The top four wrestlers in each weight class will move on to state sectionals hosted by Loganville High School. The top wrestlers from state sectionals will then advance to the state finals at the Gwinnett Arena.

AHS is the host for this year’s area tournament after Cedar Shoals, the original host, had to back out.

“I guess I kind of lost my mind and said we would host it,” joked Mat Wildcat coach Jim Stoudenmire. “I think everything will run fine. We have some quality people who run our tournaments.”

“Most everyone was at the East Metro Duals,” the AHS coach said. “Only Habersham will be a question mark for everyone.”

Both WBHS and AHS are coming off a full weekend of action. The Mat Bulldoggs defeated their county rivals 45-34 Friday before both teams competed at the Gladiator Duals hosted by Clarke Central Saturday.

AHS seniors Aaron Segars and Austin Sheppard will led the Wildcats at area. Stoudenmire believes several other wrestlers will also have strong chances to advance. Zach Guiterrez, Will Whisenant and Tristan Yaptango will help lead WBHS.
