Commerce couldn’t make it two in a row over Jefferson last week, as the Dragons retook the winners’ seat in the cross-river rivalry.
While the loss to non-region rival Jefferson may bruise the Tigers’ pride, the Commerce boys remain a force to be reckoned with in region 8-A, adding wins over Tallulah Falls and Social Circle.
The Tigers are now 9-1 in region play and 14-5 overall as the team prepares for more region action this week.
Coming up for the Tigers is Athens Academy on Friday night, in Athens.
During the last meeting between the teams, the Tigers narrowly defeated the Spartans 56-54. Since then, Athens Academy has picked up six wins and only fallen to Lakeview and Social Circle. The Commerce boys hit the courts at 8:30 p.m.
The Tigers will return to the home court Saturday as they host Prince Avenue. Prince is 1-9 in region play and Commerce easily won the earlier meeting, 64-46. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
Tallulah Falls
Commerce topped off an eight-game run with a 76-33 win over Tallulah Falls last Tuesday.
The boys ran away with it as Commerce spread the scoring around. Three Tigers scored in double figures.
Tyler Gamble led the team with 18 points, followed by Brandon Romans’ 17 points and Anthony Norris with 12. Also scoring for Commerce were Channing Anderson hitting eight, Marquese Butler dropping in six and Greg Hayes with four points. Tyler Adams, Kentrell Williams and Colton Dean scored three apiece, while Deon Brock rounded out the scoring with two points.
Jefferson
The Dragons did their best to demonstrate that Commerce’s 63-56 overtime win Jan. 9 was a fluke as Commerce took one on the chin, 55-87.
Norris scored 20 to lead the Tigers. Gamble, Butler and Romans added eight apiece, while Anderson and Hayes picked up four points each. Brock added two and Bubba Bonds scored one.
Social Circle
After winter weather pushed Saturday’s game against Social Circle to Monday night, Commerce came away with another big region win, 75-57.
The Tigers led 12-6 after the first quarter. Social attempted to regain some ground before the half, scoring 11 points, but Commerce added 21. Social had trouble keeping the Tigers from getting in the lane, allowing Commerce to increase the lead in the final quarters.
Romans led the offense with 24 points, followed by Bonds with 19. Norris scored 13.
On Tuesday, Commerce hosted Lakeview Academy. Results from Tuesday’s game were unavailable at press time.
