Mark last week down as another successful one for the Jefferson Wrestling program, as they get ready for this weekend’s Area Traditional tournament, to be held Friday and Saturday at Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville.
The Mat Dragons took part in their last dual meet of the season last Tuesday, as they took on St. Pius and Dunwoody. They came away with victories over both, defeating St. Pius 66-9 and Dunwoody 72-6.
The Varsity team was next scheduled to take part in the Coal Mountain Classic at North Forsyth. That meet was cancelled, however, due to inclement weather.
The JV team, meanwhile, took part in the King of the Hill tournament in Suwanee, where Jefferson placed second, trailing only Collins Hill at the end.
Jefferson had five champions out of eight placers. Among those taking first were Cannon Joiner in the 103 lb. class, Josh Harris in the 112 lb. category, Caleb King in the 125 lb. class, Carson Newman in the 189 lb. class and Kevin Selleck in the 215 lb. class. Other placers included Ryan Deblocker, who took second in the 140 lb. category, Jack Dollar taking third in the 130 lb. class and Shaq Maxey taking fifth in the 160 lb. category. Also winning matches were Hugh Blackstock, Cody Carlson and Cody Garrard.
Now the attention for the Mat Dragons turns to the varsity Area Traditionals at Riverside this weekend.
“You don’t ever know really what to expect because you know each team is going to have a couple of good kids in there,” said coach Doug Thurmond. “Our main objective is to go in there and put all of our kids in the sectionals the following week in the best situation they can be in, which is, or course, the higher they place, the better.”
