Madison County wrestler Isaac Ruiz won the 145-lb. class over the weekend at the East Metro tournament at Walnut Grove as region tournament time grows nearer.
Madison County wrestles this weekend in the Patriot Classic at Oglethorpe County, the final warm-up before the Feb. 5-6 Region 8-AAAA tournament at Cedar Shoals.
Ruiz won his weight class at the East Metro with a 13-3 victory in the finals.
“He had a good day,” coach Richie Houston said. “He had a tough weight class.”
Ruiz was one of five Red Raider wrestlers to place at the East Metro tournament.
The others were Cody Phillips, who was third at 119-lb.; Kyle Bates, who was fourth at 152-lb.; Max Nash, who was fifth at 112-lb.; and Colton Phillips, who was fifth at 125-lb.
Madison County finished the event tied for sixth in the team standings.
“I thought our kids wrestled well in a very tough tourney,” Houston said. “We had some gutsy performances.”
Prior to the East Metro, Madison County finished the year with a 15-11 record in duals action with a 52-24 victory over Hart County last Tuesday (Jan. 19).
“With a mixture of young and old guys, I guess it wasn’t too bad,” Houston said of the team’s dual record for the season. “There were about four or five that we should have won that we lost.”
The Red Raiders won all but three matches against Hart County. Winners included Tanner Gordon (103-lb.), Brett Coggins (112-lb.), Nash (119-lb.), Cody Phillips (125-lb.), Colton Phillips (130-lb.), Ruiz (145-lb.), Bates (152-lb.), Steven Resby (160-lb.), Kyle Gordon (189-lb.) and Matt Dove (215-lb.).
