It wasn’t the weekend that the Mat Panthers of Jackson County had hoped for. After just missing against Eastside in the area duals last weekend, the Mat Panthers were eliminated from the State Duals by the Eagles on Saturday, 42-24. That gave the Panthers a sixth place finish in the tournament.
The Panthers had defeated Westover in the opening round 68-9, but fell to LaFayette 51-17 to go into the consolation bracket. Jackson County then defeated Towers 44-24, then won in a close contest over West Laurens, 32-20, before falling to Eastside.
Ryan Howe and Izzy Carillo-Garcia went undefeated in their weight classes on the weekend. Howe had three pins while Carrillo-Garcia had four.
Charles Smothers went 4-1 on the weekend with two tech falls and two pins. Jarmari Davis went 4-1. Justin Brewer went 3-2. Cody Atkins went 2-1 with two pins. Austin McDonald went 2-3. Zach Moore went 2-3. D.J. Ledford went 2-3. Ryan Shekey went 2-3. Tre’ Horton went 2-3. Conner Andreason went 1-4. Daivon Ledford went 1-4. Jacob Hogan went 0-2.
“We went into the weekend hoping for a top four finish and came out with a top six finish, so while we did not accomplish our goal we had a very quality win along the way,” said coach Jason Powers. “Our win over West Laurens is one of the best dual matches that I have had the pleasure of coaching and it was definitely the best dual match of the year.”
“Every member of the team did their part during that dual from top to bottom and because of this we were able to beat a very tough team,” Powers added. “I am extremely proud of our team’s effort in this match and very proud of this win.”
The West Laurens match was the second one for the team on Saturday afternoon. Powers said it was a very emotional match for the team.
“Immediately following this match we had to wrestle Eastside in the conso-semis,” Powers said. “This was the match-up that I had been hoping for but we were unable to turn around and wrestle in another very emotional match. I guess the West Laurens match took everything we had because we did not wrestle well against Eastside at all.”
The Mat Panthers started the match out in a 0-32 hold and never recovered.
“This was a very disappointing end for us but hopefully everyone on the team got good experience at the state level and hopefully we will be able to perform well when traditional area, sectionals and state comes around next month,” Powers said.
