Minus two key wrestlers, the Madison County High School grapplers finished fifth over the weekend at the Region 8-AAAA Duals at Clarke Central.
The Red Raiders, without Cody Phillips at 119-lb. and Tyler Adams at 215-lb., lost to Clarke Central 38-32 in their final match Saturday, costing them a third-place finish.
Being without the services of two of the team’s top wrestlers definitely hurt, coach Richie Houston said.
“Considering having those two kids out of the lineup, that makes a big, crucial difference,” he said. “We’ve still got a lot of young guys in our lineup. We lost a couple of close matches just on mental errors.”
Phillips is battling sickness, while Adams has an injured shoulder.
As for those who did wrestle at the 8-AAAA Duals, both Colton Phillips (125-lb.) and Isaac Ruiz (145-lb.) went 4-0. Max Nash (119-lb.) and Kyle Bates (152-lb.) were 3-1.
Madison County lost its opening match to Heritage 44-22 but bounced back with victories over Salem 72-10 and Winder-Barrow 42-35 before losing to Clarke Central.
That put the team’s duals record at 13-10 for the year.
Madison County entered the Region 8-AAAA Duals on the heels of a 77-6 rout of Stephens County Jan. 5. The Red Raiders won at every weight class except one.
Madison County, which wrestled this past Tuesday (Jan. 12) against East Jackson and Jackson County (results weren’t available at press time), returns to the mat Tuesday (Jan. 19) at Hart County.
The Red Raiders’ remaining regular season slate includes two duals matches and two tournaments before the Feb. 5-6 Region 8-AAAA individual tournament.
“We’re three weeks away from the region tournament,” Houston said. “If it’s going to happen, it’s got to happen now.”
Houston hopes Cody Phillips can return by the Jan. 22-23 East Metro Individual tournament. As for Adams’ status, the team is awaiting the results of an MRI.
