Knights to open season against defending AAA champs

The Bethlehem Christian Academy baseball squad was the surprise team of the Georgia Independent Schools Association a year ago.

The Knights advanced to the GISA Class A state semifinals and won a region title in their first season of full varsity play. The team also did not lose to a Class A team until the semifinals of the state playoffs. BCA accomplished all of this without benefit of a senior and under the direction of a first-year head coach.

Now, the Knights are more known in GISA circles, coach Nick Pou has ramped up the non-region schedule this spring, beginning with defending Class AAA state champion Tattnall Square next Monday in the season opener. [Full Story »] 

Diamond Cats return to the field

The Apalachee High School baseball team opened the new season with a 12-0 victory against Central Gwinnett.

Mason Webb worked the first three innings, allowing just one run with three walks and four strikeouts. Justin Stevens pitched the fourth and fifth innings allowing three walks and striking out two.

Tony Salvaggio worked the sixth with two strikeouts. [Full Story »] 

Lady Bulldoggs defeat GWA

The Winder-Barrow High School Lady Bulldoggs earned their second win of the young 2013 season with a 3-1 victory against visiting George Walton Academy.

Jessie McWhorter scored a goal in the first half as did Ashley Phan on an assist from Clara Tapplin. Paige Howard added an insurance goal in the second half.

BreAnna Steed and Jazmyn Sterry played well on defense, coach Ben Arms said. [Full Story »]

The 2012-2013 season came to an end for the Apalachee High School boys basketball team last week, but not before the Wildcats capped a turnaround which certainly falls under the “remarkable” category.

For those of us who have been around that long, we remember how a young AHS squad struggled as they recorded just one victory two years ago.

Coach Kevin Morris, however, was one who saw the bigger picture and was able to look down the road at what was likely to transpire. [Full Story »]

Shooting Stars meets Saturdays

The Banks Shooting Stars League meets every Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Banks County Parks and Recreation Department and is open to all ages and youth from surrounding counties.

The league is a non-competitive, recreational sports league that will foster teamwork and socialization, as well as development of basketball skills.

The Banks County Leopards basketball team and Coach Cleveland are assisting the kids.

Lady Dragons’ season overturned in seconds

The Jefferson High School girls’ basketball season came to an early and disappointing end Tuesday, with a first-round loss in the state playoffs to undefeated Kendrick in Columbus.
But the spirit-crushing blow really arrived Friday, during the Lady Dragons’ semifinal loss in the region 8-AA tournament in Greensboro.
JHS fell 55-50 in overtime to Greene County High School, which managed an unfathomable finish to end regulation time.
Down with 3.3 seconds left to play and two foul shot opportunities, Greene County had just one play to make in order to tie the game.
JHS coach Jason Gibson told his team the Tigers would make one foul shot, if possible, and miss one in order to get the last shot.
“You have to block out, get rebound, chin it and brace yourself,” Gibson said. “They will foul you.”
That’s what happened. Yet the whistle never blew.
