ROLLASON: New York's newest rivalry

Madison Square Garden has been waiting for top tier basketball to come back for a while now.

Last season Knicks fans were temporarily entertained by the great story of Jeremy Lin, but this year they have something else to cheer for — the top spot in the Eastern Conference and their superstar Carmelo Anthony playing at the level that everyone expected when he first arrived in the Big Apple.

New York currently sits atop the Eastern Conference standings and is looking to be a serious title contender. The city couldn’t be happier; the Knicks have defeated the defending champion Miami Heat twice this season and have handled their schedule very well thus far. [Full Story »] 

AHS wrestlers finish third at East Metro Duals

The Apalachee High School wrestling team finished third at the East Metro Duals Saturday after finishing 4-1.

Coach Jim Stoudenmire’s team defeated Jackson, Lakeside DeKalb, Jonesboro and Winder-Barrow. The only setback of the day came against Heritage in a match where AHS forfeited four weight classes.

“We wrestled well,” Stoudenmire said.

The match against Heritage was for third place. The Patriots are also a member of Area 8-AAAAA with AHS and WBHS. [Full Story »]

It didn’t take long for Bobby Petrino to return to coaching.

The former Arkansas coach, who spend a little time as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons you may recall, has resurfaced at Western Kentucky of all places. Petrino, who was 100 percent at fault in this reporter’s mind for ruining what could have been a memorable 2012 season for the Razorbacks is looking to put his past behind him — again.

Petrino’s knowledge of football has never been questioned, even by his most ardent of critics. If his record wasn’t so stellar, it would be easy to dismiss Petrino. In the world of college (and pro) football, however, it is not that simple. [Full Story »] 

Knights drop two in tourney

The Bethlehem Christian Academy boys basketball team fell to Holy Spirit and Piedmont Academy in games played at a tournament hosted by Monsignor Donovan in Athens last week.

The Knights, who are now 4-6 overall, dropped a 56-42 game to Holy Spirit despite 12 points from Travis Burchfield and 11 points by Chance Spratlin.

BCA then fell to Piedmont 47-35 the following night. Spralin finished with 10 points while Kevin Green scored eight. [Full Story »] 

Lady Wildcats hold off late WBHS rally

The Apalachee High School Lady Wildcats held off a second-half rally by the host Winder-Barrow High School Lady Bulldoggs for a 41-33 victory last Wednesday.

The Lady Wildcats jumped out a 12-1 lead after the first quarter and continued to lead big (26-10) at halftime. The Lady Bulldoggs, however, would be within 35-28 after the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, WBHS got as close as 35-33 with 2:33 left after two free throws from Shakari Smith.

However, AHS was able to hold on for the region victory after two key putbacks by Ryan Burke in the final moments.

While pleased that his team won, Lady Wildcat coach Gary Compton said there is still work to be done. [Full Story »] 

Wildcats defeat Bulldoggs in region, county rivalry

The Apalachee High School boys basketball team added another region win to their total last Wednesday and did so at the expense of its county rival.

The Wildcats trailed by a point at halftime but used a 17-point third quarter to regain the lead at 44-39. AHS improved to 4-2 in Region 8-AAAAA with the win and 7-2 overall. The Wildcats were set to play two non-region games later in the week (see related story) before returning to region battles in early January.

“When Winder and Apalachee play it doesn’t matter about the records or which team has been hot,” AHS coach Kevin Morris said after the game. “We are always going to have this type of game. You just want to make sure you get out with the win.” [Full Story »]
