You have to like Mike Cavey. The Apalachee High School baseball coach is one who always tells it like it is. If his team is not playing well or living up to its potential, he’ll tell you.

Now, he doesn’t single out players for bad performances (the Wildcats win and lose as a team), but he’s not one to gloss the situation over when the outcome is not the desired one.

It’s a refreshing attitude and one that makes talking with Cavey about this program enjoyable. This past Sunday evening, Cavey and I spoke about his team’s fast start to the 2012 season. Just as Cavey will tell it like it is when things aren’t going right, the coach was quick to praise his team for what they have done in the early stages of the new campaign. [Full Story »] 

Matt Moore is a different person on the wrestling mat as opposed to off of it.

When he’s not competing, Moore is a typical 16-year-old high school student. He enjoys telling jokes and poking fun at his classmates in a good-natured way.

“He’s amusing to be around,” Apalachee High School Wildcat coach Jim Stoudenmire said. “Then he gets you on the wrestling mat and it’s not amusing anymore.” [Full Story »] 

Michael Parks stepped down Monday as coach of the Apalachee High School Lady Wildcats basketball program as he looked to move into new areas of education.

Parks, who told me Sunday he would like to work in the administrative side of his profession, accomplished a great deal during his time with the Lady Wildcats. The team established a mark for most wins in a season under Parks’ guidance and also came close to reaching the state tournament for the first time in program history a season ago.

Through it all, Parks has conducted himself as a true professional. Whether his team won by 30 or lost by 30, Parks was always able to keep things in perspective. He constantly praised his players and never took the route of blaming them when things may have gone wrong on the court. [Full Story »] 

The Winder-Barrow High School boys basketball team defeated Madison County 49-39 Friday night.

That is the easy part of the story.

When a basketball team wins, there are several elements which go into the victory. As is always the case, it takes a strong effort from each player who steps foot on the court. The Bulldoggs had just such an effort last Friday when Madison County paid a visit. [Full Story »]
