New coach to lead Mat Bulldoggs
New Winder-Barrow High School wrestling coach Jason Austin believes there is potential for the Mat Bulldoggs this season.
Austin, who takes over for former coach Chad Horne, has been working with approximately 30 wrestlers. Practice began back on Oct. 31 and Austin joined soon after once his football coaching duties were complete for the season.
A former Mat Bulldogg himself, Austin has clear goals for the program. [Full Story »]

Swim Doggs strong in opener
The Winder-Barrow swim team opened its season Saturday at North Forsyth’s Fourth Annual High School Invitational and exceeded the expectations of its coach, Jennifer Blevins.
The boys’ team finished sixth out of 13 squads.
Both Quinn McDaniels and Mitchell Buttler finished first and second respectively in the 100 backstroke and swam state-qualifying times (59.68 seconds and 59.73 seconds). This will be Buttler’s third straight trip to the state meet in the backstroke. [Full Story »]

Winder-Barrow cheerleading squad rules co-ed division
Winder-Barrow was not only at its best at the end of the season. It was basically perfect.
The cheer Doggs posted a 280 — its highest score of the season — to edge out second- place Ola (278) for the co-ed state title Saturday in Columbus. Two-time defending state champion Peachtree Ridge had 270 and was third.
Winder-Barrow coach Jerrie Hulsey said her team peaked at state and had the routine to prove it.
“I’m telling you, there was no flaw, not one mistake,” said Hulsey, who’s guided the Winder-Barrow cheerleading squad since 1992. “We knew it was going to take that to win.”
The win was especially sweet for Winder-Barrow’s 10 seniors, who had to settle for runners-up honors last year. This year’s senior class includes Crystal Hodge, Laura Beth Brown, Lauren Geiger, Ashley Rogers, Ashley Healan, Austin Sorrels, John Reese Fortson, Kody Sanders, Nick Oxley and Jonathan Rodriquez. Cheer Doggs prepare for state meet
Jerrie Husley knows the potential her 2011 competition cheerleading team possesses.
The Winder-Barrow High School coach now wants her squad to use all of that potential in its quest for a state championship. The Cheer Doggs, following a third-place showing at sectionals, will go for the big prize Saturday as they make the trek once again to Columbus.
“I am ready for this team to hit this routine and show the state of Georgia we deserve a state championship,” Hulsey said. “There are 10 seniors on this team and this is their last opportunity. I feel like their experience and leadership will help us bring home title number five.” [Full Story »]

Cope paces Lady Doggs to top 10 finish
Amanda Cope has done it again.
The Winder-Barrow High School cross country standout finished ninth overall at the AAAA state meet Saturday in Carrollton. While Cope was somewhat disappointed by her time, her finish of 19:52 was good enough to crack the Top 10.
“She felt her time was slow, but all of the times were slower,” said WBHS coach Michael Lofton. “Going into state, there were 12 runners who had times of 18 minutes but only two of them did Saturday. It is frustrating to finish the season at the toughest course.” [Full Story »]

Bulldoggs blanked by Cedar Shoals
Even in their final game of 2011, the Winder-Barrow High School Bulldoggs continued to battle.
While Cedar Shoals would emerge with a 33-0 victory, WBHS coach David Wagner liked the effort his team gave in the last contest of the season.
“I thought we played well, especially in the first half,” Wagner said. “Our kids came out and really competed against a physically bigger opponent. We moved the football some in spots and gave a tremendous effort. In the end, their size and speed got to us in the second half.” [Full Story »]

Cheer Doggs set for sectionals
The Winder-Barrow High School competition cheerleading team performed for scoring only Saturday during its own event.
However, had they actually been figured in the standings, the Cheer Doggs would have won and been named grand champion. It’s just another in a line of impressive performances for coach Jerrie Hulsey’s program, which is preparing this week for co-ed sectionals in Columbus.
“I thought our overall performance was the best to date,” Hulsey said. “The stunts looked very solid. We had a couple of mishaps. A person stepped off the mat and one of my flyers doubled down funny and knocked one of her bases to the floor. However, I feel like we are where we should be at this point heading into sectionals this Saturday at Columbus.”
The Winder-Barrow High School coach said sectionals determine where a team will be ranked 1 through 16, which determines the order of performance. [Full Story »]

Lady Doggs win region title again
For Amanda Cope and the Winder-Barrow High School girls cross country team, it was the same song, only a different verse for a different season.
The Lady Bulldoggs won their third consecutive Region 8-AAAA title in Conyers Saturday while Cope once again won the individual region honor. Cope (19:54) was way out in front of the pack with her closest competitor being teammate Caitlin Connell, who finished second in 20:10, helping WBHS to another region crown.
Whitley Kennedy (20:31) was third overall at region while Anna Dean (20:52) was fifth, just missed out on fourth place. Winder-Barrow’s Isabel Martin (22:44) was 18th overall while Amber Duffey was 20th in 22:51. [Full Story »]
