Madison County’s softball team came out on the short end of an epic 12-inning battle with Union Grove Thursday night in the Class AAAA state softball tournament. The Red Raiders bounced back with a Friday morning win over Paulding County, then lost to Whitewater Friday afternoon, a setback that knocked the team from the tournament.

Madison County concludes the 2011 season with a 30-7 record, the second-straight 30-or-more win season for the Red Raiders. The Red Raiders were 34-5 in 2010.

Commerce drops to George Walton

Commerce fell to George Walton 24-14 on Friday in Monroe.

Turnovers continued to impact the Tigers, who gave up 24 unanswered points after taking a 7-0 lead to open the first quarter.

Commerce (3-6, 2-3) faces a must-win situation next week versus Social Circle to lock up the No. 4 playoff spot in Region 8-A.

The Bulldogs (7-2, 4-1) secured home field advantage in the first round of the state playoffs as the region’s No. 2 seed. Undefeated Prince Avenue claimed the No. 1 seed after its win over Athens Christian. It’s the Wolverines’ first region championship in school history.

Hart Co. 22, Jackson Co. 13: Scott runs wild but Panthers lose

Wildcats win Battle of Barrow

August 31, 2007. That date marks the last time that Winder-Barrow High School defeated Apalachee High School in the Battle of Barrow football contest.

This year’s event showcased Winder-Barrow head coach David Wagner looking to get his first win as coach of the Bulldoggs over the team that he used to be the defensive coordinator for. His attempt was halted, however, by the Wildcats’ dismantling of the Bulldoggs 47-0 on Friday night.

WBHS fell to 0-9 on the season after the loss as Apalachee improved to 4-5 with both teams having just one game remaining.

“It feels great, another year of bragging rights,” said AHS sophomore running back Stanley Williams. [Full Story »]
