Wildcats notch first win of season

Apalachee High School became the first Barrow County team to win a game this season on Friday when the Wildcats pounded Madison County High School 45-9.

“It’s just a struggle,” said AHS coach Shane Davis. “We’re in a position we haven’t been in a long time. But what I’ll tell the kids is that we’re in a position we haven’t been in a while, we’re 1-0, and we’re going to try to get to 2-0.”

The Wildcats broke loose offensively Friday with five offensive touchdowns. Three of them came from sophomore Stanley Williams, another from junior Zay Henry and the last came late in the game from sophomore Jody Mathis. [Full Story »] 

Bulldoggs fall to Habersham Central

The Winder-Barrow High School football team trailed by 18 points as the second half against Habersham Central began Friday night.

However, the Bulldogg offense put together an impressive drive moving its own 36-yard line to the Raider 9. Suddenly, a fumble was recovered by Habersham Central and the possession — and seemingly the game itself — was torn away from WBHS.

The end result was a 54-10 loss in a game which was much more competitive than the final score would indicate to those who weren’t there. [Full Story »]

Madison Co. downed by Apalachee 45-9

Madison County muscled the ball into the end zone late in the second quarter to grab some momentum going into halftime. The Red Raiders trailed just 14-9 at intermission.

But the bright spots ended there, as Apalachee downed Madison County 45-9, scoring 31 unanswered points in the second half to grab its first win of the year, while the visiting Red Raiders dropped to 1-4.

Tigers overwhelm Golden Eagles, win region opener

Commerce dominated Athens Christian on Friday, beating the Golden Eagles 41-0 and winning its first Region 8-A game.

Playing before a large homecoming crowd, the Tigers seized a 28-0 halftime lead, scoring 21 points in the second quarter.

Quarterback Cody Streetman had a hand in three of those first-half scores on runs of four and five yards. He also completed a 24-yard touchdown pass to Garrett Wilson.

Trey Grier added two touchdowns on runs of one and 11 yards. And Marquavius Little scored the final touchdown, running the ball eight yards into the end zone.

The Tigers (2-3, 1-0) play Riverside Military Academy (1-5, 1-1) in Gainesville next Friday.

Bulldoggs try to slow down Habersham

It doesn’t get any easier for the Winder-Barrow High School football team.

After facing the defending 8-AAAA champion last Friday, the Bulldoggs venture to Habersham Central this week to try and slow down one of the most explosive players and explosive offenses in the region.

Quarterback Kevin Ellison directs the Raider offense and stopping him will be a top priority for the Bulldoggs. [Full Story »]

The Apalachee High School coaching staff has been working overtime this week in an effort to be prepared for Friday’s opponent.

The Madison County Red Raiders — probably more so than any team in 8-AAAA — will use a variety of offensive formations, many times changing directions during a game. That causes long hours of film study for opposing coaching, AHS included.

“They always seem to put quality skill players on the field,” said Wildcat coach Shane Davis. “Coach (Randall) Owens always does a good job with them. In the first two games this year they used a traditional Wing-T offense. They have since used the spread, a two tight end set and some ‘Wildcat’ formations. You have to be prepared for a lot and even be ready to make adjustments during a game.” [Full Story »]
