Jones named as coach

There was a new face this week around Banks County High School learning the layout of the campus and what he will be stepping into starting next month.

The new head coach for the Leopard football program, Philip Jones was on site getting the nickle tour of the facility this week. Jones will be starting at Banks County April 11.

Also on April 11, the All Sports Booster Club will be holding a Community Welcome Meet and Greet at 5:30 p.m. at the high school cafeteria with light refreshments. Community members, football players and parents are encouraged to attend to welcome the new coach. The Booster Club’s monthly meeting will follow the meeting.

Lady netters set for Dawson, Tues.

The Lady Leopard netters are looking forward to the final sub region mach of the season as the girls prepare to host Dawson County next Tuesday, March 29.

“This has been a great season and we would like to thank our supporters, it means the world to us to know we have fans,” said coach Lisa Thomas. “Come out and show your support.”

The girls are 5-2 this season after two wins last week and previously defeated Dawson County 5-0 at the beginning of the month.

Soccer boys defeat Jefferson; girls beat Rabun

It was a one game week for the Banks County boys soccer team last week.

The Leopards took on cross-region rival Jefferson last Tuesday, and the boys controlled the tempo for the win, 1-0 over Jefferson.

A big win for the Banks County baseball team Tuesday night moved the boys to 5-1 in region standings, 5-3 overall.

The diamond Leopards had a no hitter over East Hall Tuesday night that led to the 14-1 win over the sub-region opponent. This is the second win for Banks County over East Hall this season.

Coming up the Leopards take on Dawson County on the road, Thursday. First pitch at 5:30 p.m.

Soccer teams take three tough losses

Banks County’s soccer teams have hit a rough patch in the season as the teams fell to Dawson, Fannin and Lakeview Academy during the last week of play.

This week the teams were scheduled to play Jefferson on Tuesday. At press time results from that game were unavailable. Coming up, the teams head to Rabun County next Tuesday in another region competition. The girls start at 5:30 p.m. at Rabun, with the boys to follow.

The Lady Leopards run last week with the start of region play left the girls 0-7,0-2 so far in the season as Dawson and Fannin both defeated the team 8-0.

Banks County’s golfers added two rounds to their season totals this past week.

Last Tuesday, the boys played Riverside and Lakeview in a tri-match. Scored results were unavailable, but the boys lost according to coaches.

On Thursday, despite high winds, Banks County girls and took on Jefferson and Madison County at Double Oaks, as the boys faced Jefferson.

While the Madison County team shot the lowest overall score of 91, Banks County’s Lady Leopards did defeat Jefferson 94-99. The boys played a tough match but were defeated 167-207 by the Dragons.

Coming up for the golfers the team was set to take on Habersham at The Orchard golf course Tuesday, but whether weather factored into that round was unclear at press time. Still ahead the teams take on Commerce at Scales Creek Country Club Thursday.

Banks County improved to 3-0, 3-2 as the diamond Leopards started region play last Tuesday.

In the opening region game of the season, Banks County took on East Hall, defeating the Vikings 12-1.

Things started off slow as the Leopards went three up, three down across the first two innings.

In the third inning, Banks County scored the first run of the game, but East Hall tied things back up. [Full Story »]

The diamond Leopards were rained out twice last week as the season tried to get started.

With last Monday’s game against Johnson scrubbed the Banks County boys looked to get the bats swinging in Commerce in a double header with the Tigers and Westside Macon.

Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t cooperative and Saturday’s games were also a wash. [Full Story »] 

Netters set for start of region play

Banks County’s Leopards’ tennis team have three matches under their belts so far and are 2-1 as the boys prepare for this week, before the battle for sub-region dominance begins.

With rain delays hindering practices and expected to delay today’s (Wednesday) practice as well, coach Mike Ruth said that Thursday’s match is the first real test as Banks County takes on Rabun County on the road. The match starts at 4 p.m.

“I feel we can compete with these sub-region teams,” Ruth said. “With Rabun, Dawson, Fannin and East Hall all playing in the sub-region, it will be competitive. But, if we can get some more practice time I think we will be competitive with them.” [Full Story »] 

Track Leopards pushing ahead

With two of the first three meets canceled for the Banks County track team, the Leopards are still getting through the planning stages of the season as the team prepares for tough competition.

“We are pushing through the early, and cold, part of the season and preparing for the main part of the track schedule,” coach Paul Hoch said. “We are once again a young team with freshmen making up just over half of the spots on the roster.”

While freshmen hold several key events, it is the well known names that are expected to pace the teams. [Full Story »]
