After two additional wins last week, Winder-Barrow High School baseball coach Brian Smith said he was still emphasizing to his team to take it “one game at a time.”

“I know that’s an old coaching cliche but that’s what we are trying to do,” the Diamond Dogg mentor said. “Every day is a new opportunity for us. We want to stay consistent and to keep improving.”
WBHS entered this week at 9-4 overall and 2-0 in Region 8-AAAA North. The Bulldoggs defeated Madison County 9-8 last Wednesday and then recorded a 14-5 region crossover victory against Cedar Shoals Friday. Both games were at Charles W. Maddox Complex. [Full Story »] 

A three-goal second half helped push the Winder-Barrow High School Lady Bulldogg soccer team to a 4-1 victory against Rockdale County Tuesday night.

Clara Tapplin and Ashley Hagenbaugh helped lead WBHS to the victory.

The match was tied at one goal each at halftime but Tapplin scored twice in the second half and finished with three overall.

Hagenbaugh also added a goal for coach Ben Arms.

Tapplin scored her team’s first goal at the 9:06 mark of the first half, erasing what had been a one-goal deficit. Rockdale County had scored the first goal of the match at the 18:11 mark of the first half.

Tapplin struck quickly in the second half, finding the net at the 39:13 mark. After the Lady Doggs just missed another scoring opportunity at the 32:05 mark, Hagenbaugh scored with 28:44 left before Tapplin sealed the deal with 28:25 remaining.

Arms was pleased by the victory but told his team after the game to continue looking ahead and focus on the task of returning to the postseason.

The Winder-Barrow High School baseball team was clicking on all cylinders Monday when it traveled to Habersham Central.

The Diamond Doggs dispatched of the Raiders in five innings with an 18-4 win in a game which opened subregion play. Travis Demeritte helped lead the way with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate including two home runs. Demeritte now has six homers this spring. [Full Story »] 

The Winder-Barrow High School boys tennis team faced a tough opponent in Madison County Monday afternoon and dropped a 4-1 decision.

“Like the loss to Flowery Branch, we can take a great deal away from this,” said Bulldogg coach Derek Hon.

Colby Woodall, playing at No. 3 singles, won a great three-set match for his team’s lone victory Monday. [Full Story »] 

Brianna Streetmon has not missed a beat since continuing her softball career at Georgia Southern University.

The former Winder-Barrow High School standout is among the top pitchers in the Southern Conference and has already earned numerous awards for her collegiate diamond play.
Even before the 2011 season began Streetmon ranked first in a season at Georgia Southern in games pitched (44 — 2010), games started (36 —2010), and saves (5 — 2010), and was tied for first in wins (19 — 2010). [Full Story »] 

Tuesday’s game against Buford gave the Winder-Barrow High School baseball team just what it needed, according to coach Brian Smith.

WBHS faced a quality non-region opponent and got to square off against one of the state’s top high school pitching prospects as well. Even after an 8-5 loss, Smith was not disappointed in his team.
“It was a good experience and we will learn from it,” the Diamond Dogg coach said. “He (Buford pitcher Josh Heddinger) lived up to his billing. However, I was happy with the way we went up there swinging aggressively. We hit it hard but right at people.”

Heddinger, a Georgia Tech commit, played in front of several scouts, who were at the contest. [Full Story »]
