After covering the NFL and the NBA over the past two weeks, it is now time to move on to Major League Baseball.

More than any other major sport, baseball managers have to always be on the lookout for the man with the pink slip of paper because teams change managers these days like my wife changes clothes (which, I might add, always look great whatever she finally decides).

By my unofficial count, there will be seven new managers sitting in the dugouts when the 2011 season begins. That’s almost a 25% turnover and that doesn’t count the changes made during the season last year. Most of these came through firings but one came via retirement and that man needs special attention. Commerce Opens Golf Season

The Commerce Tigers’ and Lady Tigers’ golf seasons got under way last week, as Commerce played host to Banks County at Double Oaks golf course.

Both teams return to action Thursday, as they travel to Traditions to face Jackson County. That will be followed by another trip to Traditions to face the Dragons and Lady Dragons on March 1.

With the match against Banks County not being a region pairing, scores were not tallied. Coach Josh Shoemaker said with the cold weather that has plagued the area over the last month, it has been hard for his teams to get in a good practice. [Full Story »] 

Boys’ soccer teams improves to 1-1

Warmer weather can’t get here soon enough for the Banks County soccer teams, who returned to the field last week despite chilly winds. The Leopards and Lady Leopards faced East Jackson Tuesday followed by Oglethorpe County Thursday.

The boys are off to decent start, 1-1 after falling to the Eagles 4-1 on the road then adding a win at home over the Patriots. Francisco Padron and Koewy Heu started Banks County off in the first period with a goal each.

Leading 2-0 at the break, the Leopards held off the Patriots over the next 45 minutes adding another goal to match Oglethorpe’s lone goal to secure the 3-1 victory. [Full Story »]

Good start for MCHS soccer

It has been a good start for the Madison County soccer teams as both the girls and boys have added wins after the opening games.

The team faces region opponent Clarke Central on Friday on the road. Clarke Central is 2-0 coming into the Feb. 25 match. Next week, Madison County gets the home field advantage as the Lady Red Raiders host Habersham Central, March 1. Game times start at 5:30 p.m. with the boys games following. Update: Tuesday's home match against Habersham has been postponed. The rescheduled date has yet to be announced.

The Lady Red Raiders sit at 2-1 after adding a 3-0 match over East Jackson Tuesday night. With nine returning starters and 10 seniors on the team, the Lady Red Raiders have a solid core for the 2011 season.

“It is great to have so many returning. We have a unique situation where most of the team has played together for three solid years,” said head coach Molly McCarty. “You can definitely notice this when we are playing.”

Lady Tigers Out In OT

The Commerce Lady Tigers came oh-so-close to breaking into the state tournament Wednesday night, but a late shot from Prince Avenue Christian in overtime gave the Lady Wolverines the 62-59 victory, ending Commerce’s season.

“It was very disappointing,” said coach Eddie McCurley. “We played well enough to win and the game obviously it could have gone either way. This team improved so much from the beginning of the season. It’s a shame we got put out because we were just starting to hit our stride. That’s all you can ask from your team is for them to work to get better and improve from start to finish. [Full Story »] 

Eagles Season Ends At Region

The East Jackson Eagles saw their season end in the first round of region play last week as they fell 61-42 to Dawson County.

“The game kind of went like our entire season,” said coach Brian Turner. “We would be close but could never get over the hump. Many of the games we played came down to a play or two here or there and that is really how I felt the game went.”

The Tigers jumped out to a fast start, moving out to a 16-4 lead in the first quarter. The Eagles managed to close the gap to just four points at the half, just missing a couple of opportunities to tie the game. [Full Story »] 

Tigers Charge Into Tournament Play

The Commerce Tigers moved forward in the post-season last week, advancing to state tournament play after besting Social Circle to take third in the region 8A tournament and earn a berth at state. Their bid for a second straight region title ended with a loss to Athens Christian. The Tigers are currently 19-6 overall and 12-2 in region play (including the tournament). Athens Christian beat George Walton Academy 65-63 in overtime for the tournament title.

Now the Tigers’ attention turns to the state tournament, as they were scheduled to host Landmark Christian on Tuesday night. Results were unavailable at press time. [Full Story »]
