As the end of the year approaches, a look back is in order to highlight the top five sport stories of the year in Banks County High School athletics.

Between changes of coaches to accomplishing winning records and individual performances, 2010 had many ups and downs for the student athletes in Bank County.

Lady Leopards pushing past injuries

The Lady Leopards hit a rough patch right before Christmas as several players were benched due to injuries. Coach Jerry King was hoping to use the Christmas tournament at Piedmont College last weekend and the upcoming Wingslingers’ Shootout at East Jackson to find depth on the bench.

Unfortunately for Banks County, neither games from the Piedmont College fourth annual Holiday Classic went in the Lady Leopards’ favor.

“Friday we played flat and Saturday we stayed in foul trouble,” King said.

The Lady Leopards opened with a two point advantage, 9-7, over the White County Warriors. During the second period, White County surged ahead to take the lead. Banks County responded and managed to tie the game at 13-13 before the halftime break. [Full Story »] 

Leopards look to bounce back after holidays

The Banks County boys were undone over the weekend after playing one of the best halves in two seasons against Stephens County the previous Tuesday.

According to coach Mike Ruth, the Banks County boys played the best first half of a game that he has seen in two years during the Dec. 14 match-up with Stephens County. Both teams were close in the first quarter, Banks County held a small advantage, 14-13.

During the second quarter, the Leopards got aggressive and tilted the table for a 17-8 quarter, to lead at the break 31-21. The 10 point stretch would prove to be what was needed to hold out for the win in the 61-50 contest. The win over the Indians is the eighth win for the Leopards. [Full Story »] 

Lady Leopards struggle with shallow bench through holidays

The Lady Leopards’ season started off as one of the best in coach Jerry Kings’ record, but setbacks due to injuries has complicated things and now the Banks County bench is looking rather shallow.

The girls moved to 4-2 after picking up a 56-16 win over Oglethorpe, Dec. 7. However the loss of several players due to injuries across the Friday sub-region game with Fannin County and the Saturday rematch with Jackson County, leaves the Lady Leopards 4-4 with two holiday tournaments still ahead.

Coming up the girls are playing in the Piedmont College Holiday Classic this weekend. After the Christmas break, the Lady Leopards return to play in the Dec. 28-30 Wingslingers’ tourney hosted by East Jackson. [Full Story »] 

BCHS grapples for 6th

The Banks County varsity wrestlers are almost ready to head into the Christmas break, but still have one more tournament before being off from competition. This week the Leopard grapplers compete at the Tommy Warren Duals at Oconee County Saturday.

The mat Leopards are coming off of a sixth place finish at last weekend’s Choo-Choo Christmas Classic at Morgan County.

Banks County scored 142.5 points to finish just shy of the top five in the 14 team tournament, but did place higher than Madison County (128), Habersham (121), North Oconee (81) and Hart County (73). [Full Story »] 

Leopards 1-0 in sub-region

Banks County’s varsity Leopards are having a rough time on the hardwood, the boys went 1-2 last week. Even with the team now holding a 2-6 overall record, the boys took care of business last Friday in the first game that really matters.

The Leopards played a good game to earn a hard fought 51-49 victory over Fannin County for a sub-region win. The remaining sub-region games are after the team returns from the Christmas holiday break.

This week, the varsity boys look to make a return run to the championship game of the fourth annual Piedmont College Holiday Classic.

Looking for consistency

The biggest problem facing the Banks County Leopards on the court right now is turnovers, but it’s a problem coach Mike Ruth has already seen the team begin to solve.

Banks County was killed last Tuesday in the Habersham County game with 33 turnovers. Ruth said that Habersham capitalized on 21 of those turnovers to score.

“Our kids are hustling and it is just the little things we have to work on,” said Ruth. “It is going to take some time to feel out and build consistency on those things. I’m trying to let them play through since it’s still early in the season.”

While Ruth wants to see the boys work past mistakes during the games, he isn’t going to just continue to allow the same ones over and over. [Full Story »] 

First sub-region challenge ahead

The Banks County Lady Leopards defeated East Jackson and fell to Jackson County last week.

Referring to poor shot selection, coach Jerry King said that the Lady Leopards still have some development before getting into the majority of sub-region play after the Christmas break.

Still ahead this week, the Banks County girls host Fannin County, the team’s first real test in sub-region play. The Lady Leopards look to break a seven-game losing streak to the Lady Rebels.

Mat Leopards head to Choo-Choo

Banks County’s mat Leopards have been busy since the start of the month, earning a second-place finish at the Patriot Classic and getting two placers at the Panther Invitational last weekend.

With some early successes, the Leopards look to continue to grow as the boys prepare to compete in the Morgan County Choo-Cho Classic this weekend, followed by a tri-match with East Jackson and Gainesville next Tuesday, Dec. 14, at Nicholson.

This past weekend at the Panther Invitational, Banks County brought home 14th overall from the 26 teams. The mat Leopards had a fourth and fifth place individual finisher. In the 130 class, Justin “Fish” Fincannon fell to Locust Grove’s grappler for fourth place. [Full Story »] 

Leopards fall to 1-2 after 84-59 defeat

The first home game of the season was a disappointment for the Banks County boys Tuesday night as the Leopards hosted the Habersham Central Raiders.

After coming off the season opening at Rabun County last week where the boys split the two game opener, the Leopards were looking for a close battle against the Raiders and started off that way, but Habersham pulled ahead and won the 84-59 contest.

Foul trouble seemed to be the theme for the night as both benches worked to keep the players from sending the other side to the line. For Banks County, Adam Hiten was the best on free throws hitting 12 of 14 for all of his points. Daz Steeple also had a high percentage on the line, going 2 for 3.

Habersham led by seven after the first quarter and outscored Banks County 20-15 in the second quarter for a 33-21 advantage at the break. [Full Story »]
