Former Winder-Barrow High School head football coach Ben Corley has helped the Clarke Central Gladiators to a perfect 10-0 regular season and a Region 8-AAAA championship.

Clarke Central defeated Flowery Branch 21-0 last Friday to wrap up a No. 1 seed for the playoffs. The Gladiators will face Mays in the opening round of the state playoffs. [Full Story »]

Amanda Cope and Skyler Lowe have been leaders for the Winder-Barrow High School cross country teams all season.

So it should come as no surprise the WBHS standouts led their respective teams at the AAAA state meet Saturday in Carrollton. Cope paced the Lady Bulldoggs to a 10th place finish while Lowe helped the WBHS boys to a 31st overall team placing. [Full Story »]

The Apalachee High School Wildcats raced out to a 5-1 start this season. A chance to host a state playoff game was still in the works. Making the postseason almost seemed a certainty.

However, nothing is guaranteed in life for the sport of football. The AHS team learned that the hard way as it finished 1-3 down the stretch missing out on the postseason after last Friday’s 35-10 loss to Loganville. And while the Wildcats did defeat Heritage, a team which finished the season as the No. 3 seed, that fact is probably providing little consolation today since the team is done practicing. The East Jackson girls cross country team closed out its season with a top-ten showing in the state meet at Carrollton on Saturday.

The girls placed seventh out of 26 teams, following only state champ Westminster, Blessed Trinity, Lovett, Jackson County, Buford and Bleckley County.

Sherri Blalock led the girls’ charge, turning in a 24th-place effort out of 184 runners with a time of 21:19. Other results included Courtney McDowell 37th (22:03), Skyler Cozzens 54th (22:54), Sheena McEachin 55th (22:55), McKenzie Parr (23:51), Amanda Anderson (24:08) and Caroline Flynn (24:50). In Jefferson, the folks at Gresham Motorsports Park will give the gift of speed when the green flag falls over the 27th annual World Crown 300.

Tigers Open Post-Season At Bremen Fri.

Social Circle provided just the kind of regular-season closer the Commerce Tigers needed as they decimated the Social Circle Redskins 49-21 Friday night.

Now all eyes look toward Bremen, where the Tigers will travel to play the Blue Devils Friday night in the first round of post-season action. Kickoff is at 7:30. [Full Story »]
