Wildcats bounce back, defeat Salem

After suffering its first regular season loss in almost two years a week earlier, the Apalachee High School football team shook off the natural disappointment that comes with a setback of that nature and returned to its winning ways Friday night.

The Wildcats (2-1) defeated visiting Salem (2-2) 24-7 behind another strong ground attack. While the season is not yet half over, the win was key for AHS and its postseason hopes for 2010.

“It beats losing,” coach Shane Davis said. “I’ve tried them both and I like winning better.” [Full Story »]

Tigers Make History With 43-34 Win Over Washington-Wilkes

They say the third time's the charm.

In two previous match-ups, the Commerce Tigers had come up short against Washington-Wilkes.

But on Friday night, Commerce picked up their first win in school history over Washington-Wilkes, winning 43-34 on the road.

Panthers Fall To East Jackson 29-14

A failure to capitalize on a fumble plagued East Jackson team may have cost the Jackson County Panthers a region win Friday night, not to mention bragging rights in what’s sure to become an annual in-county rivalry.

The Eagles lost the ball four times to fumbles, but the Panthers only managed to score twice against East Jackson, as the Eagles went on to win 29-14.

Backup quarterback Jalen Banks came off the bench and threw touchdown passes to River Bryant and Tony Holton to account for the Panthers' two scores.

Jackson County was held scoreless through the first half, while East Jackson broke into the end zone three times, making the score 19-0, with two failed two-point conversion attempts, at the half. [Full Story »] 

Eagles Best Panthers, Win 29-14

Despite losing the ball four times on fumbles, including three while in scoring position, the East Jackson Eagles still managed to defeat the Jackson County Panthers 29-14 Friday night at East Jackson.

The Eagles would take control early, scoring twice in the first quarter to take a 13-0 lead, with a failed two-point conversion on their second touchdown.

East Jackson would score again with just under five minutes left in the half, but again fail on a two-point conversion attempt to make it 19-0. [Full Story »] 

MCHS runners head to Eagle Run on Saturday

Madison County’s cross-country team had a strong showing last week as the varsity boys made quite an impression at Cedar Shoals on Sept. 7.

The Red Raider runners went first, second, fourth, fifth and seventh. Dalton Owensby took first place followed by Corey Brakhage, Ben Larkins and Steven Tucker.
Cedar Shoals took the other positions in the finish.

Coming up for the Madison County runners is the Eagle Run at East Jackson High School on Saturday.

This is the fourth annual Eagle Run meet and includes runners from Apalachee, East Hall, Habersham Central, Jackson County, Jefferson Rabun County and East Jackson.

Madison County should be well rested before the meet on Saturday since the team has not competed since the Cedar Shoals run.

The Eagle run begins at 9:30 a.m. for varsity boys and 10:15 a.m. for the varsity girls. JV races will follow at 11 a.m. There is a $5 admission charge for spectators.

Volley Eagles To Face Panthers Monday

After a busy week, the East Jackson Lady Eagles volleyball team is taking a moment to catch its breath.

They’ll return to the court on Monday as they travel across the county to face the Lady Panthers of Jackson County, along with East Hall. Match time is scheduled for 6 p.m. against East Hall, with the Jackson County match to follow.

On Tuesday, Sept. 7, the Lady Eagles played host to East Hall and Jefferson. They came away with a 2-0 victory over the Lady Vikings, with set scores of 26-24 and 25-15. Kiersten Meehan had five aces against East Hall, while Jenna Dukes had four kills and Haley Simmons had two blocks. [Full Story »]
