The East Jackson Lady volleyball Eagles hope to rebound this week as their regular season comes to an end. They’re coming off losses to Lakeview, Tallulah Falls and Gainesville.

The Lady Eagles are 3-7 in the area going into this week, when they’ll wrap up regular season play with a trip to Jefferson to face the Lady Dragons and non-area opponent Hebron Christian Academy on Thursday.

Jefferson enters the week undefeated in the area, while Hebron carries a 30-5 overall record into Thursday night. [Full Story »]

Thoughts and takes to this point from the 2010 college football season:

•University of Georgia fans are coming unglued at the seams.

Perhaps the most unrealistic bunch in all of college football, Bulldog supporters are scratching their collective Vince Dooley memorials at how the season has turned out to this point. Perhaps one of my greatest forms of entertainment is listening to the post game call in show when UGA loses. So many coaching experts out there will let you know they have the answer to what is ailing the Bulldogs although in reality they don’t have a clue as to what they are talking about. [Full Story »]

The East Jackson Lady Eagles hope to end their softball season on a high note.

A forfeit by Hart County in a game slated for Sept. 30 meant East Jackson’s regular season was slated to end on Tuesday against Jackson County. A win would send the Lady Eagles into the playoffs.

“They’re a solid team,” said coach Jason Rainey. “They’ve got good coaching and good pitching. We played them very well last time, so I think our girls have confidence and have gained confidence. It will be a good rivalry. Everybody’s friends between our two teams. It should be a good game.” [Full Story »] 

Red Raiders host region tournament on Sat.

It’s a week off, but not really for the Madison County Red Raider softball team.

The ladies are working towards Saturday and the first round of the region tournament as Madison County takes on the winner of Winder-Barrow versus Loganville.

UPDATED:Loganville defeated Winder-Barrow after eight innings on Wednesday. Madison County faces Loganville at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Sat.

Winder-Barrow is the number four seed while Loganville is the number five seed. During the regular season, Madison County lost a shootout in extra innings to Loganville early on then defeated Winder-Barrow by a 10-run margin.

Loganville defeated Winder-Barrow two weeks ago by the same margin, 12-2. However, Red Raider head coach Doug Kesler isn’t about to prepare for one team over the other. [Full Story »] 

Lady Leopards pick up 6-2 win over Rabun

The Lady Leopards’ softball season is drawing to a close with the last game of the regular season being played on Wednesday.

Today (Wednesday) Banks County hosts Dawson County in the final game and senior night. The game was rescheduled from this coming Thursday due to the number of Homecoming activities and festival, according to school officials.

The three seniors on the team, Laura Rose Pickens, Courtney Entrekin and Brooke Harris have helped mold the team into shape this season.

Banks County is 13-9, 5-4 heading into the final region showdown. Dawson County is also 5-4 in the region and Banks needs the win to remain in the third place spot in the sub-region standings. [Full Story »]

Jefferson to face another huge road test with unbeaten North Oconee

This year’s Jefferson Dragons have logged plenty of miles via Jefferson City School transportation.

After all, it’s nearly October and Jefferson has played just one home game.

The Dragons crank up the bus again Friday when they play unbeaten North Oconee (4-0, 1-0) in Bogart at 7:30 p.m. [Full Story »]

Winder-Barrow High School’s varsity football team lost its fourth game of the season to the number two-ranked team in the state this past Friday.

Clarke Central High School, which advanced to the state championship game in 2009, was simply too much for the rebuilding Bulldoggs to handle as the Gladiators rolled to a 55-0 win.

Friday’s game also marked the third straight year that Clarke Central defeated the Bulldoggs while scoring at least 50 points. The Gladiator offense moved the ball with ease over the course of the game, scoring eight touchdowns and compiling 485 total yards. [Full Story »] 

Heritage provides test, but AHS passes

With Apalachee and Heritage tied at halftime, Wildcat head coach Shane Davis told assistant Conner Foster he wanted something big to happen to start the second half.

Davis got his wish as freshman Stanley Williams returned the second half kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown. That play turned out to be huge as AHS went on to a 28-14 Region 8-AAAA victory at R. Harold Harrison Stadium. The win pushes the Wildcats to 3-1 in region play.

“All of our games are big,” Davis said. “That was a really good one to get. Heritage was a tough opponent. We knew they would be good defensively. Our kids played well and fought hard. You are going to have to be a second half team in this region.” [Full Story »]
