New season, same tough game

It looks like it is going to be another tough season for the Madison County Red Raider football team.

Head coach Randell Owens considers the forthcoming season as the toughest schedule he has seen since coaching at Madison County. The straight region schedule throws the Red Raiders directly into the thick of things against region newcomer Flowery Branch in the first game, Aug. 27.

With only the Hart County scrimmage on Aug. 13 to sort out any kinks, Madison County will have to adapt fast to take on the Falcons, who made it to the Final Four last season in the class AAA playoffs. [Full Story »]

In less than 96 hours, the Lady Red Raiders’ softball team can stop waiting on the season to get here.

Sunday, Aug. 1, marks the official start of practice for high school fall sports and the Lady Red Raiders are looking for another strong season after last year’s winning season when the ladies went 27-4, picked up the region title and went as far as the Sweet Sixteen in the playoffs.

This week, Madison County had voluntary practice as well as one final camp before the season gets underway. The Lady Red Raiders are set to kick off their season Aug. 11, with the Leadoff Classic. [Full Story »] 

Hancock just misses at Dragway

After a week’s delay due to wet weather, the Atlanta Dragway picked up where it left off with the National Dragster Challenge Saturday, with competitors from all over coming out to vie for top honors.

Joe Haddon of Oxford battled his way to the Super Pro finals, lining up against hometown hero Jeremy Hancock of Commerce, who took a bye run to the finals. Haddon was dialed only slightly slower with a 4.86 prediction, next to Hancock’s 4.81 dial-in.

Hancock launched a tad early for a -.004 red light, instantly handing victory to Haddon, who left the line with a .023 green light. Haddon took a 4.85 second joy ride at 142.18 mph, while Hancock let off for a 9.43 second run at 43.55 mph.

Gridiron Leopards ready to put on pads

The summer is winding down for the Banks County Leopards.

The football team officially begins practice on Monday and this summer has been productive for the team, as the coaching staff and players worked their way through the Pride of Summer program and spent time at camp.

Looking to improve on last season’s 2-9 record, the Leopards take a crack at the subdivided 8-AA region. [Full Story »]

For the Eagle faithful, the next four weeks may seem like an eternity.

That’s because we’re less than a month away from the opening of the East Jackson Eagles 2010 football season.

The Eagles closed out their breakthrough 2009 season as the region runners-up, going 10-2 overall and 8-1 in the region. They made it into the second round of state playoffs, first defeating Manchester 27-14 before ending their season with a 58-0 loss to Lovett. [Full Story »] 

Tigers Hit Practice Field Monday

The minutes are counting down to the holiest of holy days for the Tiger Nation – opening day for Commerce Tiger football.

The opening game, a non-region pairing with Commerce’s age-old rival, the Jefferson Dragons, is slated for Aug. 27, but the first major move towards that big day comes on Monday, Aug. 2, when the team takes to the field for the first official practice of the 2010 season.

The practice, which will allow the teams to suit up in shorts, shoulder pads and helmets, will begin the 25-day countdown for kickoff against the Dragons on Tiger Field. [Full Story »] 

Ten Sharks Medal At State

It was a strong close to the 2010 swim season for the Commerce Tiger Sharks over the weekend, as all 10 swimmers that qualified for the Georgia Park and Recreation State swim meet in Tifton medaled in their events.

Ages 10-under swam on Friday, while the 11-up swimmers held their events on Saturday. Preliminary events were held in the morning, with the top eight finishers returning for the finals in the afternoon. [Full Story »]

Work continues this week for the Winder-Barrow and Apalachee High School football teams.

The AHS Wildcats held a morning workout Monday as the final week of summer drills arrived. Coach David Wagner and the WBHS Bulldoggs will host practice sessions later this week as they prepare to begin the new school year Monday and move to regular after-school practices. [Full Story »]
