Tigers Wrap Up Spring Practice

Spring football practice wrapped up last week for the Commerce Tigers in preparation for this fall and the 2010 season.

Last season the Tigers were 7-5 overall with a 5-1 region record. The push into the state playoffs was cut short by Darlington in the second round.

This year the players are already showing early signs of being a typical Tiger team. [Full Story »]

East Jackson girls’ basketball coach Amy Larimer is leaving EJCHS.

Larimer said she will go to Walnut Grove in Walton County next year, where she will serve as the department head for physical education and as a basketball coach. She will also coach middle school softball.

Larimer has served as the head basketball coach for the Lady Eagles since the school opened in 2007. [Full Story »]

Cantrell Wins At Lanier

Allen Cantrell of Commerce won the National Vintage Racing Association (NVRA) Limited Sportsman race Saturday night at Lanier National Speedway.

Cantrell, piloting a Chevy coupe, passed second-place finisher Jerry Williams, of Cornelia, piloting a 1932 Ford in the late stages of the race.

Robert Cantrell, Allen's father, and also of Commerce, came in third in the event. Allen Cantrell also won the track's Mini Stock event.

The National Vintage Racing Association sanctions and promotes the “Vintage Thunder” Racing Series, the largest touring vintage stockcar racing series in the United States. Several of the cars competing in the events are restored originals that raced during the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s.

The Limited Sportsman division is just one of five divisions that compete in the NVRA.

For local football coaches David Wagner and Shane Davis, the spring practice window was not a time to waste.

Wagner had to get to work immediately at Winder-Barrow High School as he begins to install new offensive and defensive schemes and to try and build a winning tradition for a program which has struggled in the past couple of decades. Special teams work will be covered in the fall. [Full Story »]

Goodwin takes over as head coach

With summer baseball less than one week away from starting, the Banks County diamond Leopards were introduced to their new head coach and assistants on Monday.

Coach Dean Goodwin will step into the role left by former head coach Joe Lord, who resigned to pursue other interests, earlier in the month.

A parent meeting with the new coaching staff is being scheduled, at press time it was set for June 3. [Full Story »]

In general, there’s a strong tradition for wrestling excellence in Jackson County. Jefferson High School’s record is one of the most successful and coveted in the state, while JCCHS has had a strong resurgence in recent years.

Now, a group is working to write more history and to make the county wrestling scene as a whole stronger.

Headed up by coach Marty Robinson and JCCHS sophomore Tre Horton, a Jackson County Wrestling Club was started in the last few months, introducing kids to Freestyle Greco Wrestling. [Full Story »]

After a long break, local racers were eager to get back on track at the Atlanta Dragway, as “Saturday Insanity” took over the facility Saturday.

David Brand of Covington returned to the 6.50 Index finals to defend his points standings against Matt Ward of Fair Play, S.C. Brand’s ’67 Camaro left the starting line first with a .031 green light. Ward followed with a .052 reaction in his ’69 Camaro. Brand’s light did all the work - Ward couldn’t catch him at the top end - finishing with a 6.55 elapsed time at 106.34 mph. Brand claimed the win in a 6.56 second run at 104.93 mph, with a .01 margin of victory. [Full Story »]

Summer work began for the Winder-Barrow High School baseball team Monday and will continue through July as returning players begin preparations for 2011.

Coach Brian Smith’s team is fresh off a runner-up season in Region 8-AAAA where it was able to host a state playoff series, something which was a goal going into the 2010 campaign. Now, it’s back to work for the Diamond Doggs. [Full Story »]
