AHS tennis prepares for region tourney

The Apalachee High School Wildcats will enter the Region 8-AAAA tennis tournament as the fifth seed from the North subregion.

Coach Dan Woschitz’s team will likely face Monroe Area Thursday at 9 a.m. in the opening round of the region tournament, hosted by Madison County High School.

Banks County’s netters are heading to the region tournament at North Oconee.

The tennis teams defeated Walnut Grove to make it through into the region tournament as the third seed.

For the boys, Jefferson is the top seed with North Oconee in second, the girls seeding is reversed with North Oconee on top and Jefferson second.

Banks County heads to the region tournament on Thursday with both the Leopards and Lady Leopards playing at 10:30 a.m.

The Jefferson track teams came away from Saturday’s Jefferson Relays with strong performances to carry them into the latter half of the season.

For the boys, it was a victory, scoring 134 points to outdistance second place Decatur and third place Athens Academy, while Commerce, Oglethorpe East Jackson and Galloway rounded out the field.

For the girls, it was a second place effort, scoring 106 points to overall winner Decatur’s 129. Athens Academy, Oglethorpe, Commerce, East Jackson and Galloway rounded out the field. [Full Story »]

After a rough couple of weeks, the Jackson County Panthers were in need of some good outings to get their ship back on post-season course.

They’ve done just that, picking up a win against Mountain View that moved them back into contention.

High speeds return to the high banks in Jefferson this Saturday night, as Gresham Motorsports Park returns to action.

Saturday’s event will feature a 100-lap Pro Late Model feature with main events in the Outlaw Late Model, Renegade Street Stock, Mini Stock and Truck divisions. [Full Story »]

The Jefferson golf teams returned to action last Wednesday, facing off against Prince Avenue and Madison County at Lane Creek Golf Course.

The boys came away with a tie, as both they and Madison County shot 170, while Prince Avenue shot 175.

Patrick Hilton and Josh Flowers each shot 41 to lead the Dragons. Michael Baker, Austin Rowland and Isaac Kelly each shot a 44. [Full Story »]

This one went to Winder-Barrow High School.

Afer being upset by the Apalachee High School back in March, the WBHS Diamond Doggs were on a mission to make sure it didn’t happen again in the rematch. With a methodical effort, coach Brian Smith’s team took a 6-0 win to continue on its march to the postseason. [Full Story »]

Much can still happen during the 2010 regular season, but one thing appears certain: the Winder-Barrow High School baseball team, barring something unexpected, will advance to the postseason once again this year.

Yes, there are still mountains to be climbed and hurdles to be cleared, but the Diamond Doggs appear to be focused on the right things. They are getting quality pitching, solid defense and plenty of offense during their Region 8-AAAA battles and when you combine those three elements, then you are always going to have a chance for success. After splitting last week between a loss to East Jackson and a win over Walnut Grove, the Banks County diamond Leopards have a challenging time ahead this week.

Ahead for the Leopards is the make up game from last Thursday against Jefferson.

The Dragons will host Banks today (Wednesday) at 5:30 p.m. The Jefferson game follows Tuesday’s game at North Oconee.

The Tigers brought home a fourth-place trophy and the Lady Tigers brought back fifth from the Jefferson Relays last weekend.

Commerce’s track teams still have a handful of meets left as the athletes prepare for the upcoming region meets and, hopefully, the state rounds.

This week, both squads will head out Waterworks Road to compete in a tri-meet Thursday at 4:00 p.m. at Eagle Stadium with East Jackson and East Hall. [Full Story »]
