It’s not been a great week for the Jackson County Panthers.

The Diamond Panthers find themselves in the midst of a three game slide with losses this past week to Franklin County and Morgan County.

The Jefferson Dragons continued their winnings ways last week, picking up two wins in a double header against Dawson County.

The Dragons now enjoy a two-game lead over North Oconee in the region.

Up next for the Dragons is a trip north to Fannin County for a Saturday double header with the Rebels. [Full Story »]

Rogers picks up Pro Cup win at Gresham

Clay Rogers dominated the USARacing Pro Cup 250 at Gresham Motorsports Park Saturday. For Rogers, who won the last USAR race held at the track in 2007 when it was still Peach State Speedway, it was business as usual.

“Even though it’s a different track, it still drives a lot like the old Peach State – just with a new Gresham wrapper on it,” said Rogers in Victory Lane after beating Benny Gordon to the line by a 0.470-second margin. “This track has a lot more grip than the old one, but you still have to drive it the same. I’ve been with two different teams since I last won here, but it still feels just as good to win this time as it did the last.” [Full Story »]

It was a region clash Monday afternoon similar to an old-school boxing match.

And while Muhammad Ali, Sonny Liston or a young Mike Tyson were not at the ballpark, when it was all over, all involved knew two heavyweights had certainly just gone toe-to-toe.
Winder-Barrow hosted Loganville in a matchup of two of the upper level programs in Region 8-AAAA and when the dust settled it may prove hard to top the drama of the afternoon.

The visiting Red Devils escaped with a 4-3 win after rallying in the top of the seventh after being down to their last strike — literally. [Full Story »]

WBHS to host LHS Monday

Two of the teams expected to battle for the top spot in Region 8-AAAA will meet today in Winder as the No. 4 WBHS Diamond Doggs host No. 6 Loganville at 5:30 p.m.

Coach Brian Smith's team enters the game at 11-2 overall and 5-2 in region play after wins against Heritage and Salem last week. LHS, coached by Jeff Segars, is a perennial state championship contender. LHS is 11-2 (7-0) with its lone setbacks coming by 2-1 scores to South Gwinnett and Dacula in non-region games.

The Red Devils won state two years ago and advanced to the semifinals last spring before falling to Starrs Mill. WBHS advanced to the second round of state in 2009.

Mark it down as another strong week for the Jefferson golf teams.

Last Thursday, Jefferson traveled to Double Oaks Golf Course in Commerce to face Commerce and Athens Christian.

The boys came away with a victory, shooting a 180 to Commerce’s 183 and Athens Christian’s 226. [Full Story »]

It was a mixed result for the Jackson County track and field teams last week, as they took part in a quad-meet at EJCHS.

The boys finished second with 60 points, trailing only top scoring East Jackson’s 119.5. Franklin County finished third with 47.5 points. Athens Academy placed fourth with 19 points.

The girls came home with a third place result, scoring 29 points to top-scoring Athens Academy’s 80 and second place East Jackson’s 67.

Commerce golf coach David Stephenson’s hope that the Tigers can get in some rounds with nice weather may be crushed if Monday was any indication, but the forecast looks clear for this week’s matches.

The Commerce golfers have shown improvement over the past couple of rounds as both the boys and girls were on the links last week.

“As the weather is getting better I think we will too,” said Stephenson. “We need to continue to improve. If we are to make it to state we have to be able to compete.”
