An aggressive Lithia Springs team put a quick end to the state tournament run by the Winder-Barrow High School boys basketball team Friday.

The Bulldoggs dropped a 68-54 contest in the opening round of the Class AAAA tournament ending a season with a long list of accomplishments.

“That’s what I hope people will remember more than this game,” first-year WBHS coach David Sokol said after breaking the contest down. “We accomplished several positive things this season.”

It’s early Monday morning and David Sokol’s thoughts are already on Friday night.

The Winder-Barrow High School varsity boys basketball coach is studying game footage of Lithia Springs, his team’s first round opponent in the Class AAAA state tournament. For Sokol and his Bulldoggs, it will be a busy week of preparations.

Bulldoggs fall in region finals to Rockdale

The Winder-Barrow High School boys basketball team looked Rockdale County in the face Saturday night and didn’t blink.

In the championship contest of the Region 8-AAAA tournament, the Bulldoggs didn’t go quietly and were within three points of the state’s No. 1 team in the second half. While Rockdale County would eventually take the region tournament crown with a 62-51 win, WBHS had made its impact felt.

Bulldoggs to play for region title

The Winder-Barrow High School boys basketball team is one win away from the Region 8-AAAA championship. Standing in the Bulldoggs' way, however, is the team which has been at the top of the mountain for all of Class AAAA throughout the 2009-2010 season.

WBHS (21-5) will meet No. 1-ranked Rockdale County (26-1) Saturday at 8:30 p.m. in the 8-AAAA tournament final. The game will be played at Monroe Area High School.

Coach David Sokol's team defeated Madison County 52-44 Friday night in the semifinals while Rockdale County stopped Clarke Central 67-53. [Full Story »]

The Winder-Barrow High School boys basketball team wasn’t going to be denied this season.

The Bulldoggs won the regular season subregion title a year ago but then were upset in the quarterfinals of the Region 8-AAAA tournament. While that may have been on their minds to some degree Tuesday night, WBHS pulled away from Cedar Shoals in the second half for a 55-40 victory. [Full Story »] 

Six local wrestlers set for state

The big stage is at hand for six local wrestlers.

The Class AAAA state tournament will begin Thursday morning at the Gwinnett Arena with four Winder-Barrow High School wrestlers competing along with two from Apalachee High School. [Full Story »] 

Bulldoggs, Lady Doggs prepare for region

The Winder-Barrow High School varsity basketball teams will have a few extra days to prepare for the Region 8-AAAA tournament.

Coach David Sokol and the No. 1-seeded Bulldoggs will await the winner of the Heritage-Cedar Shoals contest. The WBHS boys will take the court for the first time in the region tournament Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Monroe Area.

The WBHS Lady Bulldoggs will meet Loganville Wednesday at 4 p.m. in a contest which will also be played at Monroe Area.

State swimming postponed

The Class AAAA state swim meet at Westminster College in Atlanta has been postponed twice due to weather conditions.

The Winder-Barrow High School swimmers, who were initially scheduled to race in the preliminaries Friday, will now have the preliminary rounds Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Westminster.

If the Swim Doggs qualify for the finals, they will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday.

WBHS enters postseason hoping for more

David Sokol is like most coaches. He wants his team to be playing well, its best even, as the postseason arrives.

It appears the Winder-Barrow High School varsity boys basketball team is turning it up a notch at the right time. Victories against Habersham Central and Apalachee this weekend had the Bulldoggs at an impressive 18-5 overall and 11-3 in region play with just one regular season contest remaining. [Full Story »] 

AHS wishes Wagner well at WBHS

Make no mistake Apalachee High School football coach Shane Davis wishes his trusted assistant David Wagner well in his new venture as head coach of cross county rival Winder-Barrow High School.

Yet, on the same hand, it won’t be the same with him gone, Davis said.

“I’m not going to sit here and say it’s a lot of fun right now,” the Wildcat head coach said earlier this week. “I have to look at it personally and professionally. Of course, it’s a good thing for Wag. It’s hard to be upset when you see someone from your program going on to be a head coach.” [Full Story »]
