The East Jackson Lady Eagles played in the Sweet South Classic in Morgan County last week, picking up a win against Burke County in the process.

The Lady Eagles will host region rival Fannin County on Friday night as they continue to look for their first region victory of the season.

During the Christmas holiday break, the Banks County Lady Leopards faced two tough opponents at the Pickens County Tournament. Despite losing twice, Banks played with both Walker and Pickens.

“We just need to keep working towards our goal which is to be playing our best ball at the end of the season,” said coach Jerry King.

The Lady Leopards are now 3-8 for the season, with a region game against Jefferson coming up on Friday. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. with the boys to follow. Jefferson is 1-10 for the season. Updated:The Jefferson game on Friday has been canceled.

Banks was on the road on Tuesday, facing Fannin County. Results from Tuesday’s game were unavailable at press time.

Following a few days off and a win over Jackson County, the Commerce Tigers are ready to get back on the basketball court this weekend.

Coming up for the Tigers is a region contest against Lakeview Academy on Friday. The Tigers will face the Lions on the road following the girls’ game at 7:00 p.m.

On Saturday, the Tigers look for bragging rights over rival Jefferson, as Commerce hosts the rescheduled game. [Full Story »] 

Mat Panthers win at Hart County

It was a good New Year’s break for the Mat Panthers of Jackson County, as they came home with their first tournament win of the season with a victory over the weekend in the Georgia-Carolina Classic in Hart County.

Jackson County went 5-0 on the weekend to win the tournament, with no team scoring more than 21 points against them.

The Mat Panthers broke 50 in all but one match, that being the final against Banks County when they scored 47. [Full Story »]

The Lady Dragons of Jefferson picked up their first victory of the season during the holiday break with a victory over North Paulding during the Pickens County tournament last week.

Now they look towards the start of region play, as they will host Banks County at home on Friday.

Being a sports fan and having the ability to be patient often go together like oil and water, fire and gasoline, drinking and driving.

To be honest, the sports fan who is patient is rare. If you find one, take a long hard look at him or her because it might be some time before you find one again.

At Apalachee High School, Michael Parks knows about being patient. Parks is a coach, however, and probably can tell you how some fans at least aren’t into being patient. Yet school officials at AHS have shown that it pays to have patience in a coach and a program. The proof is showing itself in the Lady Wildcats 2009-2010 basketball season.

When one watches Michael Parks in action, don’t expect to see a version of Bobby Knight.

Parks will not be seen yelling on the bench in front of his Apalachee High School Lady Wildcats. Parks certainly will not be throwing a chair. After each game, wether a win or loss, Parks remains calm and composed, in control. The coach who undertook a major building process a few seasons ago is perhaps beginning to see some return on the dividends he has put in.

The Lady Wildcats have already set a new school record for number of wins in a season (six). The AHS girls have given Loganville a battle in two games this season and enter this Friday’s matchup with region and county rival Winder-Barrow with a sense of confidence like the program has not experienced.

Rivalry continues: WBHS to host AHS Friday

Apalachee High School girls basketball coach Michael Parks doesn’t hide the fact his team is looking forward to Friday’s matchup with cross county rival Winder-Barrow.

“I would be lying if I said we haven’t discussed it,” Parks said. “With the quality players they have, we follow how they are doing. We want to see how we do against them. My girls want to show they are a quality team and a win against Winder-Barrow would help show that.”

This Friday’s basketball matchup is the latest athletic contest between the two schools. The girls will battle at 7 p.m. at WBHS followed by the varsity boys at 8:30 p.m. As is usually the case with the local rivalry, a large turnout of fans is expected. [Full Story »]

The Jackson County Lady Panthers were slated to return to action Tuesday in tournament play at Pickens County.

The Lady Panthers were to open their tournament against Sequoyah.
