Banks looks for another sub-region win

It is all about the defense for Banks County High School’s varsity Leopards.

Coach Mike Ruth has been drilling defense into the team and it is paying off as the boys picked up a very important sub-region win over Walnut Grove last Friday night.

The 73-65 win was described by Ruth as “the most complete game we’ve played,” and improved the Leopards region standing to 2-5.

Varsity wrestlers on the mend; BCMS team places fifth in Duals

Banks County’s wrestling team had a rough go of things over the weekend as the Leopard grapplers competed in the East Metro Tournament at Walnut Grove.

Missing eight wrestlers from the line-up, head coach Kasey Hanley and coach Tyson Baxter were eager to see how the younger Leopard grapplers would stack up against tough varsity matches.

Out of brackets full of mostly AAAA schools; Banks’ young guns wrestled well, with the majority of the guys adding at least one feather to their cap.

Leopards host Walnut Grove, Friday

It was a big turnaround for the Banks County Leopards last weekend.

The boys’ basketball team picked up wins over North Oconee and Stephens County in two hard games.

Banks improved its record to 3-9 for the season with the wins which came after the team “played with a purpose and took pride in the their game.”

“They played hard and for a purpose,” said assistant coach Jerry Loftice. “The players were playing for Coach Ruth and took pride in what they were doing. [Full Story »]

The State Duals turned out a lot rougher than Banks County was hoping. 

Another championship for Jefferson’s mat Dragons and several injured Leopards ended the weekend. The top seeded Dragons wrestled as expected to take the title over Sonoraville, 41-22.

It was not all bad news for the Leopards at the State Duals, as two of the starting freshmen had the best showing of the tournament. Mason Patton and Hayden Dilbeck each went 3-0. [Full Story »] 

Leopards named to All Region

Ten Leopard football players were honored by being selected for All Region.

Named to the All Region first team, Matthew Patton, a junior, highlighted his season on the field with 119 tackles, three sacks, three forced fumbles and two safeties. Patton played linebacker and tight end.

BCHS boys face North Oconee Friday

Snow and ice prevented the Banks County Leopards from going to Jefferson last week.

The sub-region game has not officially been rescheduled, but might be played on Jan. 30. The unexpected day off came after Banks lost to Fannin County last Tuesday.

This week, the Leopards hosted Oglethorpe County on Tuesday. Results were unavailable at press time. [Full Story »] 

Mat Leopards head to State Duals

After two delays for weather, the 8-AA Area Duals finally were decided at Riverside Military Academy on Monday.

It came as no surprise that wrestling powerhouse Jefferson took top honors at the duals.

Banks County came in second after North Oconee defeated Dawson County, eliminating the need for a true second match.

The Leopards faced East Jackson in the first round of the duals and defeated the Eagles 57-18. In the second round, Banks met North Oconee and won 48-27. [Full Story »] 

Grapplers head to Area Duals

Winter break for the Banks County High School Leopard grapplers saw the team competing in two dual meet tournaments, bringing home a second and fourth place finish.

Attention now turns to the Area Team Duals scheduled Friday and Saturday at Fannin County. With the possibility of a snowy forecast, coach Kasey Hanley said that the tournament could be relocated to Dawson County if it does snow.

The region 8-AA duals will provide Banks a crack at both Jefferson and East Jackson. Both schools have been in good matches up to this point. Jefferson as a dominating force in the region stands as the team to beat. [Full Story »]

During the Christmas holiday break, the Banks County Lady Leopards faced two tough opponents at the Pickens County Tournament. Despite losing twice, Banks played with both Walker and Pickens.

“We just need to keep working towards our goal which is to be playing our best ball at the end of the season,” said coach Jerry King.

The Lady Leopards are now 3-8 for the season, with a region game against Jefferson coming up on Friday. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. with the boys to follow. Jefferson is 1-10 for the season. Updated:The Jefferson game on Friday has been canceled.

Banks was on the road on Tuesday, facing Fannin County. Results from Tuesday’s game were unavailable at press time.
