If nothing else, David Wagner’s phone has been ringing a lot more in the last week than it normally had been.

It’s all part of the territory now for the new Winder-Barrow High School head football coach. Wagner, who had served the past several years as the defensive coordinator at cross county Apalachee High School, will look to build the WBHS Bulldoggs into the type of power the AHS Wildcats have been and continue to be in head coach Shane Davis.

Eagles Defeat Oglethorpe and Fannin

Strong play allowed the East Jackson Eagles pick up wins against Oglethorpe County and Fannin County last week, but a Friday night loss to Jefferson landed the Eagles solidly in second place in the sub-region with a 5-4 record going into play this week.

The Eagles will host Oconee County on Saturday, as the Warriors look for traction themselves in region play.

Banks looks for another sub-region win

It is all about the defense for Banks County High School’s varsity Leopards.

Coach Mike Ruth has been drilling defense into the team and it is paying off as the boys picked up a very important sub-region win over Walnut Grove last Friday night.

The 73-65 win was described by Ruth as “the most complete game we’ve played,” and improved the Leopards region standing to 2-5.

Round 2 Friday: Can 12-4 Tigers Beat Jefferson Dragons Again?

Commerce’s basketball success continues as the Tigers swing back around for a rematch with Jefferson Friday night.

The 12-4 Tigers head across the river to take on the Dragons and to defend Black and Gold pride after the 63-56 victory a week earlier.

The Jackson County Panthers are still searching for their first win of the new year this week, as well as looking to gain some ground in region play after dropping games last week to Mountain View and Hart County.

The Panthers will play host to Stephens County Friday night at the Pit. The Indians enter play this week 1-6 in the region and 3-14 overall. The Panthers won in their last meeting back on Dec. 11, 59-47.

Mat Dragons win at Sham Slam

For the third time in four years, the Jefferson Mat Dragons have come home from the Sham Slam at Habersham Central High School with the tournament title.

Jefferson took top honors on Saturday with 273.5 points, besting Lafayette with 198, Northwest Whitfield with 193, White County with 127 and Alexander with 105. [Full Story »]

Mat Panthers take second at Walhalla

It was another strong week for the Mat Panthers of Jackson County, picking up wins at home last Tuesday before moving on to place second in a tournament in Walhalla, S.C. on Saturday.

Last Tuesday, Jackson County played host to Forsyth Central and Gainesville, going 2-0 on the night with wins over both schools. [Full Story »]

It was a close, rough and tumble game Friday night, but in the end, the Jefferson Lady Dragons came away with a region victory in overtime over in-county rivals East Jackson for their second region win of the season.

Up next is a rematch with another in-county rival, the Lady Tigers of Commerce. Jefferson is looking to follow up a win over Commerce earlier this month with another victory.
