WBHS, AHS teams shine during Wildcat tournament

It was a quality showing for both the Apalachee High School and Winder-Barrow High School wrestling teams this weekend at the AHS Wildcat Round Robin event.

The Mat Bulldoggs, coached by Chad Horne, took third at the event while the host Mat Wildcats, led by Jim Stoudenmire, were fourth. Both coaches agreed it was an impressive showing against some quality opposition.

Tiger Grapplers Finish Just Shy of Third

The Commerce High School wrestling Tigers placed four wrestlers and finished seven points out of third place in the Panther Invitational last weekend.

Wrestling powerhouse Jefferson took first place with 278.5 points after six first-place matches, one second-place, three third-place and one fourth place finish.

Gilmer County finished with 197.5 points to take second, followed by a tie for third between Jackson County and White County at 143 points. Commerce finished with 136 points. [Full Story »]

Mat Eagles Travel To Morgan County Fri.-Sat.

The East Jackson Wrestling Eagles had a rough time of it over the weekend.

The Eagles placed 21st out of 25 teams in the Panther Invitational, scoring 27 points.

East Jackson was scheduled to face Loganville, Locust Grove and Lithonia Tuesday. Results were unavailable at press time.

The Eagles will travel to Morgan County for a traditional tournament Friday and Saturday.

Jefferson falls to North Hall, Oconee

The Lady Dragons of Jefferson came up short in their bid for their first win of the season last week, as they fell to both North Hall and Oconee County last week.

Now the attention turns to their next opportunity, as they prepare to travel to Dawson County to face the Lady Tigers on Friday.

The varsity Lady Leopards have two upcoming home games that coach Jerry King wants to put in the win column.

Banks County is 1-2 after falling to Rabun County last Friday, 68-34.

“We were beaten pretty badly by Rabun,” said King. “They played a hard full-court press that we prepared for in practice but didn't execute well in the game.”
Tuesday night, Banks hosted Dawson County in the season’s second region game. Results from the game were unavailable at press time, but the girls were expecting a fast, well-coached opponent.
