No. 1 Griffin too much for AHS

The magical season came to an end for the Apalachee High School football team Friday night.

Visiting Griffin High School, who entered the postseason as the No. 1 team in Class AAAA, took a 24-3 victory at R. Harold Harrison Stadium in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs. The Bears led 7-3 at halftime but used an interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter to seize momentum after the Wildcats had taken possession with a chance to move in front.

Griffin, who improved to 13-0, advances to the semi-finals. AHS finishes the 2009 season at 12-1, advancing to the quarterfinals for the first time in school history. [Full Story »]

PLAYOFF NOTEBOOK:

Shane Davis cut his coaching teeth at several places before arriving at Apalachee High School five years ago.

One of those stops was at Morgan County High School in Madison where he was an assistant for Kenny Moore. At Friday night’s game against Marist, Moore was in attendance watching his former assistant direct his own program.

“It’s obvious Shane has done a great job at Apalachee,” said Moore, who is now retired from coaching but remains in school administration. “They clearly work hard in the weight room and have a great deal of enthusiasm.”

Jackson County takes fifth place at Allatoona

The Jackson County wrestling team opened up their season this past weekend at Allatoona High School with a fifth place finish at the Blackbeard Duals.

The team went 3-2 on the weekend and had wins over Etowah, Kennesaw Mountain and Allatoona, but came up short against Woodland and North Forsyth. [Full Story »]

The Jefferson Lady Dragons got their basketball season underway Saturday, but not in the way they had hoped.

Jefferson opened the Tabo’s Tip-Off tournament with a loss to Eastside, 45-25.

The Lady Dragons were 3-18 from the free throw line and 2-21 from the three, missing 27 shots in the paint. They also had 34 turnovers during the course of the game. [Full Story »]

A win is a good way to kick off a season.

That’s the way the Lady Panthers of Jackson County feel about things after scoring a 48-39 victory over St. Pius Saturday to open the Mountain Thanksgiving Classic at Kennesaw Mountain.

While the temperature outside steadily falls, the Lady Tiger basketball team hopes to raise the heat on the court.

With the start of the basketball season less than a week away, Commerce seeks to improve from last year’s 6-17 record. Coach Eddie McCurley said that the Lady Tigers are putting the past behind them and throwing last year out the door.

“I hope we don’t have another year like that,” said McCurley. “Our starters are coming off of knee injuries from last year. We are keeping our fingers crossed that we can keep everyone healthy. We do not want to go through the same thing we went through last year with the injuries.”

Despite coming up just short at the end, the Jefferson Dragons made a strong start to their 2009-10 season Saturday night.

Despite missing several players due to football season, and with a few of those players taking to the court despite having played against Buford the night before, the Dragons made a strong effort against Eastside, coming up on the short end of a 52-51 score in overtime in the opening game of the Tabo’s Tip-Off tournament. Banks County’s Mat Leopards are poised for another exciting wrestling season. Last season, the Leopard grapplers finished tied for 12th with East Jackson at the state tournament.

This year, Banks County is setting high goals as fifth year coach Kasey Hanley expects each grappler to aim for being a state champion.

“Our goals are the same every year. We tell the students who come out that if their goal is not to be a state champion, then they need to find another sport,” Hanley said. “If they don't reach that goal and just barely fall short, then maybe they still end up as a state medalist.”

Hanley added that while the freshman may not win state, when they set their goals high it carries over as they continue in the sport. [Full Story »]
