Leopards set sights on Patriots

The Banks County Leopards are set to finish out the final two games of the season at home.

This week, the Leopards host Oglethorpe County as Banks County celebrates homecoming.

On Thursday, the football team’s Mother’s Huddle is sponsoring a Homecoming Festival at the high school. See page 2B for more details.

The Leopards will enter into Friday’s game against Oglethorpe following a hard fought game against Fannin County last week. [Full Story »]

Correction: In last week’s The Banks County News it was incorrectly reported that the 8-AA cross-country region meet would be on Oct. 24. The correct date of the meet is this Saturday, Oct. 31, at Riverside.

Banks County hosted its last cross country home meet of the season with both teams sweeping runners from Johnson.

The Oct. 20 meet was the final run for the Leopards before the region meet this Saturday at Riverside Military.

Banks County’s cross-country teams’ eyes are set on the region run this weekend at Riverside Military.

This week, the team worked in a home meet on Tuesday as a final preparation for the region meet on Saturday.

Leopards look to finish out strong

It was long, cold night in Jefferson last Friday, as the Jefferson Dragons broke the Leopards dreams of a return to the postseason with a 35-6 defeat.

The Leopards now will look to end the season strong with a 5-5 record. To accomplish this goal, Banks County will have to win each of the last three games starting with this Friday’s road game at Fannin County.

Last year, Banks County took a 34-13 win over the Fannin County Rebels, but that could prove difficult this season. [Full Story »]

Lady Leopards halted at Sweet 16

The Banks County Lady Leopards had a good run going for a trip to Columbus that ended just shy of the Elite Eight as Rockmart took the best in a three game series.

In the Sweet 16 competition, Banks faced Rockmart to determine placement in the Elite Eight last Friday.

Rockmart would sweep the Lady Leopards in the first game, Banks rebounded and won the second game to force a third game on Saturday. The winds were blowing in Rockmarts’ favor as the Lady Leopards fell 3-0 to end the postseason. [Full Story »]

A week off and a back to basics approach is what the Banks County Leopards are taking into this Friday’s game with region powerhouse Jefferson.

The Leopards have had a less than stellar season so far, as Banks sits 2-3 in region play; 2-4 overall. With four games left and the Dragons on deck for Friday night, Banks County has one shot left to hold onto its goal of returning to the postseason.

The Dragons remain undefeated this season in an effort to mirror last year’s performance that took Jefferson into the second round of the playoffs. Leopards’ coach Blair Armstrong did not mince words when he said that most people would favor Jefferson in Friday’s game. [Full Story »]

Banks County’s Lady Leopards have hit the postseason full throttle as the girls now advance into the Sweet 16.

Standing between Banks County and entry into the Elite Eight is 7A-AA Rockmart. The Rockmart Yellow Jackets went 10-1 during region play and defeated Lovett 4-2,8-0 in the first round doubleheader of the state tournament. Banks County begins the second round of the state playoffs on Friday.

Leopards in a must win situation

Banks County has one week to prepare for one of the toughest games of its season.

Following last Friday’s loss to East Jackson, the Leopards now must win every game left in the season for a shot at the playoffs. This Friday, Banks County is on a bye week, but returns on Oct. 16 to face the undefeated Jefferson powerhouse.

“We are obviously, probably not going to be picked to win,” said coach Blair Armstrong. “We have to execute … If we play our best game and they don’t play their best game, we have a chance.”

While the team takes a few days off, before getting back to practice, coach Armstrong said that the Leopards have to “lick our wounds and look at ourselves and how to get better.” [Full Story »]

Banks Co. to compete in MainStreet Meet Oct. 13

East Jackson Comprehensive High School will host the seventh annual MainStreet Meet, sponsored by MainStreet Newspapers, on Tuesday, Oct. 13.

Teams from East Jackson, Jackson County, Jefferson, Banks County, Madison County and Commerce will take part, with the boys’ race scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. and the girls’ race to follow.

Also competing will be runners from the team’s middle school teams. The middle school races begin at 4:30 p.m.

Runners will compete on a 3.1-mile course that starts and ends in Eagles Stadium.

BCHS softball team fighting for state playoff berth

The Banks County Lady Leopards ended out their regular season last week with a 5-1 win over AA newcomer Walnut Grove. The Walnut Grove Warriors are in their second year and this was the first meeting between Banks County and Walnut Grove.

The final region win moved Banks County into a 7-2 region record and 18-7 overall as the Lady Leopards started the region 8AA tournament this week. Banks begins in second place in 8AA. The final standings for the 8B-AA sub-region had North Oconee in first going 9-0 in region play, followed by Banks, Walnut Grove, Jefferson, East Jackson and Oglethorpe.

Banks County split a double header Tuesday with Jefferson, as the Lady Dragons won the first game 1-0 and Banks rallied to dominate in the second game with a 10-2 victory. The deciding game three starts Wednesday at 5 p.m.

If the Lady Leopards can win the series, it will guarantee Banks a spot in the state playoffs.

Coming up, if Banks defeats Jefferson, is the second round of the region tourney at Dawson County on Saturday. The double elimination tournament will decide seeding for the state playoffs.
