Wildcats, Gladiators to battle for first place

An early season clash on the gridiron between Apalachee and Clarke Central could have long-range impact on the Region 8-AAAA race.

After an off week, the Wildcats will be back in action in a big way this Friday when they host the Gladiators, currently ranked No. 8 in the state for Class AAAA teams. AHS coach Shane Davis knows this game will be tough and knows how much a victory would mean for both schools. [Full Story »]

Trailing 19-13, the Winder-Barrow High School football team was driving for what could have been the tying or even go-ahead points in the fourth quarter against region foe Cedar Shoals last Friday.

Suddenly, that opportunity, as well as the game, was ripped from the Bulldoggs’ hands. Cedar Shoals would take advantage and bust open what had been a game with the outcome in doubt and take a 39-13 win.

Wildcats to host Top 10 foe

The Apalachee High School football team will host a state-ranked foe Friday when the Clarke Central Gladiators march into R. Harold Harrison Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

The Wildcats (2-0 overall, 2-0 in Region 8-AAAA) are coming off a bye week while the Gladiators defeated Habersham Central. Clarke Central is a perfect 3-0 in region play and is the lone 8-AAAA team in the Top 10 at No. 8 in the latest poll released Monday.

AHS coach Shane Davis said the winner of the contest will have gain an advantage in the battle for region race, at least at this point in the season.

•Opponent’s all-time record: 269-131-4
•What else: The Raiders’ 45 points last week against Monroe Area were the most the program has scored since a 49-7 victory over Elbert County in 2007 … Madison County’s lone victory over Cedar Shoals came in 2005. That victory locked up a state playoff berth that year … Cedar Shoals is coming off a playoff appearance in 2008 in coach Xarvia Smith’s first year with the Jaguars … Cedar Shoals is going for its 20th consecutive winning season this year. The Jaguar program has suffered just one losing season in 38 years of football.

The cooler temperatures from earlier in the week have gone away. Late summer continues to hold on as the first game of the 2009 Winder-Barrow High Scool football season finally arrives.

It’s 6:15 p.m., still more than an hour before kickoff. Players have yet to take the field for pre-game warmups. The stands on both sides of W. Clair Harris Stadium are empty.

The Jackson County Lady Panthers softball team is on a roll, having won their last four games and going undefeated thus far in region play.

Their next match up comes on the road, as they’ll travel to Hart County to face the Lady Bulldogs.

Their next opportunity will come Thursday, as Jackson County will travel to Lakeview Academy to face the Lady Lions as well as Jefferson.

After last week’s matches, the Jefferson Lady Dragons volleyball team is in the midst of a nine match winning streak, and is currently undefeated in the area with a 3-0 record.
