AHS has strong early showings

The Apalachee High School volleyball team defeated Alcovy High School last Thursday and pushed Rockdale County to the limit before falling in three sets.

The Lady Wildcats, who were 3-1 entering this week, suffered a setback prior to the Alcovy match when Ryan Burke hurt her arm in warmups causing coach Michael Parks to make a lineup change at the beginning of play.

Brittany Wehbunt started her first match and played outside hitter. The team took a 25-18, 25-20 victory. [Full Story »]

After months which have included offseason conditioning, working in the weight room, spring practice, summer camps and now preseason practice, the Apalachee High School football team has something special within its sights.

The Wildcats will begin their 2009 season Friday when the Monroe Area Purple Hurricanes make the short trek to Winder. This is what the players work for. They will finally step on the field again for a game that counts.

Wildcats defeat improved Monroe Area

The final score does not indicate how much of a battle the Apalachee High School football team had Friday night in the 2009 season opener.

Before pulling away for a 31-7 win, the Wildcats had to scrap, especially in the first half, against an improved Monroe Area High School team, coached by Matt Fligg. The Purple Hurricanes, who were 0-10 last season, led 7-3 in the second quarter running their newly installed triple option offense. AHS (1-0, 1-0) would rebound to lead 10-7 at halftime before pulling away in the third quarter with 21 points.

"Monroe has a good team," said Wildcat coach Shane Davis. "We scored right before the half and that helped us seize the momentum I believe." [Full Story »]

The Jefferson Dragons wrestling team and former Jefferson wrestler Hunter Garner will be among those recognized by the Northeast Georgia Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday.

The Northeast Georgia Sports Hall of Fame is located in the Northeast Georgia History Center on the campus of Brenau University.

The History Center will recognize athletic excellence at a luncheon at 11:30 a.m., Aug. 29, at the Georgia Mountain Center in downtown Gainesville. [Full Story »]
