There have been numerous books written by many outstanding writers about the relationship between fathers, sons and sports and how the three are closely connected.

Sports writers with much more prestige than I carry have done as much through the years. I realize not all fathers and sons share the bond of sports and some share it more than others.

Old school racing takes center stage at Atlanta Dragway

Atlanta Dragway held their second Saturday Insanity event, giving fans some not-to-be-missed moments as racers pushed the limits in pro-mods and old school cars. The competition was intense, with three hole shot wins out of four finals, coupled with very close margins of victory.

The 6.50 index final was a run between beauty and the beast, as Mike Johnson’s ’66 Mustang faced off against Joe Rampley’s ’76 Vega Wagon. Johnson traveled all the way from Easley, S.C. to join the show, while Rampley is a much closer Gainesville local. Rampley launched with a .014 green light, Johnson following with a .027 reaction time. [Full Story »] 

Local travel ball team knocks off nationally ranked foe for title

The Georgia Warriors, a 10-and-under travel ball team which includes Madison County players, knocked off undefeated and nationally-ranked Midway at the “Battle of the Bats” in Winder.

Commerce Looks For Payback In Shootout

Jackson County Comprehensive High School will host the inaugural Jackson County Baseball Summer Shootout, starting Thursday and running through Saturday.

East Jackson, Commerce and Banks County will also be host sites for the weekend, as 20 teams travel to the area to participate.

The first tournament game will be Thursday with Commerce taking on Jackson County at 2:30 p.m. at Tiger Field.

The Shootout follows last week’s JV and varsity doubleheaders that pitted Commerce against Jackson County.

Tiger Sharks To Host Flowery Branch In First Home Meet

The Commerce Tiger Shark swim team had another busy week in the pool as it traveled to Dacula on Thursday, June 18, for a dual meet and to Gainesville on Saturday for the North Georgia Swim League, Splash swim meet.

Next up is the first home meet of the year. The Tiger Sharks were due to host Flowery Branch today (Wednesday) before traveling back to Dacula Saturday to take part in the Dacula Invitational.

Forty-five Tiger Sharks competed at Dacula last Saturday where bad weather shortened the meet.

Simpson, Hill record wins at Lanier

It was a family affair Saturday night at Lanier National Speedway as Greg Simpson held off his brother Shawn to take the win in the Pro-Late Model feature event. Greg took the lead on the 14th lap, and would stay there the rest of the night to win the 60-lap race.

The event was stopped by a lengthy red flag after the cars of James Nealis and Shane Chastain crashed on the front stretch. After the cleanup, Greg was able to hold off Shawn for the win, with Braselton’s Shane Sawyer finishing third, Trey Poole fourth and Dwayne Buggay fifth. Jeremy Rice, Dalton Grindle, Tom Schuette, Will Prance and Cale Langford rounded out the top ten. [Full Story »] 

Several Sea Dragons take first at Gainesville meet

It was a successful outing for the Jefferson Sea Dragons on Saturday, as they took part in the North Georgia Swim League SPLASH event held at the Francis Meadows Acquatic Center in Gainesville.

Several of Jefferson’s swimmers brought home first place finishes, while several others placed in the top ten, with some events having over 100 swimmers take part.

Ryan Childress took first in the Girls 25 10-under Freestyle. Gregory Prozorovskiy took first in the boys’ 6-under Backstroke. Heather Perry took first in the girls’ 10-under Breaststroke. [Full Story »]

Banks County is helping Jackson County Comprehensive High School host the inaugural Jackson County Baseball Summer Shootout, starting Thursday and running through Saturday.

Banks County, East Jackson and Commerce are host sites for the weekend, as 20 teams travel to the area to participate.

“This is the first time we've ever hosted a summer tournament, but we believe it's one of the things we needed to do to help get our program where we want it to be,” said JCCHS head baseball coach Tommy Fountain. “We're so excited about the teams coming in and are looking forward to a great weekend.”

BC hosts 2nd annual Alex Tucker All-American camp

The Bank County wrestling team hosted a wrestling clinic for middle and high school level grapplers this week at the old high school gym.

Running from Tuesday through Thursday, the camp featured Alex Tucker as the instructor and had approximately 20 pre-registered.

Tucker wrestled for Kennesaw State University, and was the college’s first head coach from 2006-2008 with a winning 79 percentage. Under Tucker’s leadership, the Fighting Owls took the 2007 Collegiate State Dual Championship.

During the three day clinic, the grapplers were shown drills and participated in hands-on skill development. Each day featured two sessions designed to improve abilities of wrestlers and raise the intensity of the grapplers while on the mat. [Full Story »]
