Banks sending two to state track meet

The Leopards’ track program will be sending two to the state competition starting May 7 in Jefferson.

Lyn Hester qualified for the state meet last Saturday and set a new school record with a shot put throw of 48’9”.

J. Diaz also set a school record over the weekend in the 1600m with a 4:45 finish, then qualified for state on Monday in the 3200m with a runner-up finish of 10:38.13

Chalk it up as another successful outing for the Jefferson Dragons track and field team, as seven team members performed well enough at the boys’ regionals in Jefferson over the weekend to qualify for state competition.

State qualifiers include Tyler Porter, Josh Kles, Derrick Perkins, J.J. Damons, Zac Crosby, Josh Watkins and Wesley Milton.

Commerce’s track Tigers have qualified five athletes to compete in the state track meet May 7-9 in Jefferson.

They are Damian Wood, Deon Orsborne, Jon Cash, Javon Womack and Torrance Wilcher.

Commerce will compete in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, the 110-meter hurdles, the 4x100-meter relay and the 4x400-meter relay.

Buggay picks up late model win at Lanier

It was a wild night of racing Saturday at Lanier National Speedway that saw former track champ Dwayne Buggay pull out a win in the 40-lap Pro Late Model feature.

When the eight-car field took the green, pole sitter Dalton Grindle tangled with Braselton’s Shane Sawyer, resulting in Sawyer tagging the wall.

Sawyer’s night was done, and he would be credited with an sixth place finish. [Full Story »]

Special Olympics slated for May 8

Athletes from all over Jackson County will be participating in local games for the Special Olympics on Friday, May 8 at the JCCHS stadium.

The opening ceremony will be held at 10:15 a.m. with the awards ceremony to be held around 1 p.m.

Over 100 athletes will compete in games such as the 100-meter dash, softball throw, shot put and wheelchair races. [Full Story »]

JCCHS comes home sixth from region meet

The season has come to an end for the Jackson County boys’ track and field team.

While the team finished sixth, behind overall winner Elbert County, Oconee County, Eastside, Hart County and Franklin County, no Panthers placed higher than third in the meet.

To qualify for state, an athlete must finish in at least second place in their individual event.

Tigers Fight For Playoff Position

With just one game left in the regular season, the baseball Tigers are in a “dogfight” for footing in the state Class A playoffs.

The Tigers fell to Hebron 2-0 on Monday night after sweeping a doubleheader from Tallulah Falls on Thursday and losing 13-0 to region-leading Lakeview on Friday.

The Tigers played Athens Christian Tuesday (results were not available at press time) and will wrap up the regular season Friday, hosting Athens Academy at 6 p.m. [Full Story »]

The Jefferson Dragons opened up region play by sweeping Rabun County in a double header on Friday.

The Dragons next travel to Banks County to face the Leopards in round two on Thursday in a game that will determine the seeding for the state tournament.

A win for Jefferson would put them playing again at 8 p.m. against either Fannin County or North Oconee at Banks for first or second seeding and host in the first round. A loss means they will play at 5 p.m. for third or fourth seeding on the road. [Full Story »]

“We were up to the challenge and eager to punch our ticket to the state playoffs,” said coach Joe Lord about the Banks County Diamond Leopards. “We are excited to play in the final four of the region tournament and even more excited that we are hosting the tournament at our park.”

The Leopards will advance to the final four in the region tournament. Banks County hosts the tournament Thursday starting at 11 a.m. when the Leopards face the Dragons from Jefferson.

“It will be a big challenge, but we are excited about the opportunities that are in front of us,” Lord said. “We've now qualified for the state playoffs in back-to-back years, and that is a great accomplishment for our program.”

Lady netters’ playoff return ends

The Lady Leopard netters made a huge accomplishment this season, returning to the state playoffs after over a five-year absence.

The ladies ended their season against Pepperell in Lindale last Wednesday in the first round of the playoffs. Pepperell defeated the Lady Leopards 3-2, but coach Lisa Thomas was still pleased with the performance of her team.

“Each girl played her best and being able to go to the first round of the state playoffs was a huge accomplishment for each of the girls,” Thomas said. “I know this is just the beginning of our success as a team and we are already looking forward to next year's season.”
