Mat Wildcats win Battle of Barrow

The Apalachee High School Mat Wildcats avenged an earlier season loss to Winder-Barrow High School by taking a 46-33 victory in the Battle of Barrow Friday night.

For AHS coach Jim Stoudenmire, it was another step for his team in becoming a contender this season. The Mat Wildcats have made steady improvement as the 2008-09 season has progressed.

AHS swimmers improve times

The Apalachee High School swimming teams were among the 48 schools taking part in a large event at Westminster in Atlanta last weekend.
AHS coach John Slater said the event is a preliminary to the state swim meet.

“Many state qualifiers did not even make the finals for their events,” the AHS coach said. “Most of our swimmers were able to improve their times. The boys improved their time in the 400 free relay time.” [Full Story »] 

Wildcat players set to sign

Three Apalachee High School football players were set to sign letters of intent Wednesday morning.

Seniors Chaun Gresham (South Carolina), Qucravion Ash (Presbyterian College) and John Livesay (Chowan University) will each continue their football careers at the next level.

A ceremony was held at AHS Wednesday morning, the first day high school seniors could officially sign.

Hard times have fallen on the men’s basketball program at the University of Georgia.

While there was some cause for hope after last spring’s miraculous run through the SEC tournament, the disappointing 2008-09 season has cause Dennis Felton to be shown the door. (It should be remembered that Felton’s severance package for failing at his job outweighs what most people get for succeeding at theirs.) [Full Story »] 

Bulldoggs use strong defense in victory

After his team lost to Apalachee back on Jan. 9, Winder-Barrow High School coach Eli Connell couldn’t shake the defeat from his mind.
It ate away at him. All he could do was look at the calendar for the next meeting.

As game week arrived for the rematch, however, the Bulldogg coach decided to downplay the contest to his players somewhat. Connell focused instead on Friday’s game with Madison County, which WBHS also won.

Eagles take second place in subregion

Last week proved just how strong a team the East Jackson Eagles are after they nailed down sole possession of second place in the subregion with a strong victory over Banks County.

Next up is a home stand against a strong Rabun County team on Friday. The Wildcats entered play on Tuesday 5-4 in the region, and 12-9 overall, fresh off a win over Union County.

The two teams have split their last two meetings, with East Jackson winning the first and Rabun County the second. Both games were in January of 2008. [Full Story »]

With just four games left in the season, and three of those being subregion pairings, the Lady Eagles of East Jackson had hoped to be on firmer ground.

But so far, they’ve recorded just one region win, placing them fourth in the subregion with only Oglethorpe County trailing them.

Their hopes to add more checks in the win column fell flat last week with losses to Banks County and Oconee County. [Full Story »] 

EJCHS Mat Eagles Take Eighth At Vidalia

Mark it down as another solid showing for the Mat Eagles of East Jackson.

A weekend trip to Vidalia gave East Jackson an eighth-place finish in the Sweet Onion Classic on Saturday.

The Mat Eagles garnered 98 points, while winner Commerce had 204 points. [Full Story »] 

Tigers Pick Up Two Region Wins Last Week

The Commerce Tigers are confident they will be seeded fourth or fifth in the region tournament.

With three region games this week and the two region wins from last week the Tigers should be assured a spot. Commerce is 7-4 in the region and 8-9 overall.

Best-case scenario: Commerce goes 3-0 this week and the third spot opens up as a possibility. Currently, Commerce is fourth in 8-A behind Athens Christian, Lakeview and Athens Academy respectively.
