It may not feel like spring yet, but to the Banks County Diamond Leopards it is close enough.

The Leopards’ season is off on the right track as Banks won its preseason game 14-3 over Johnson last Friday. Monday, Banks was on the road for the first official game of the season, taking on the Franklin County Lions. The AAA Lions were not much of a threat as the Leopards took an 8-1 victory.

Joe Lord returns to coach the Leopards this season and will be looking to build off the success of last year.

Banks County’s Mat Leopards ended a strong season at the state tournament on Saturday, in a tie for 12th place with East Jackson.

Banks had a third place finish from Tramane Mayfield at 285 pounds, a fourth place finish from Matthew Patton at 215 pounds and fifth-place finisher Demetric Dempson at 171 pounds.

Banks scored 47 points, as did East Jackson. East Jackson had two third-place finishers and a sixth-place finisher.

Both teams trailed state champion Jefferson, Lovett, Toombs County, Henry County, Dublin, Sonoraville, Westminster, Swainsboro, Blessed Trinity, Benedictine and Buford.

The post season was a brief experience for Banks County as the Leopards were bumped out by Dawson County, 58-47.

Dawson took the 11-point win over Banks to remove the Leopards from the region tournament last Wednesday, ending Banks’ season 14-12 overall and 6-7 in region competition.

“I am proud of this team,” said coach Mike Ruth.

Ruth had hoped to win 10 games this season and said he was pleased with the guys surpassing his goal. [Full Story »] 

Banks County High School’s grapplers wrapped up the regular season last week.

With the regular season complete and the Mat Leopards sending 11 to the State Sectionals this weekend in Jefferson, Banks County has the potential to make quite an impact next week at the State Tournament.

However, before the Leopard grapplers can prepare for Macon, they have to have a good showing this weekend in Jefferson.

The Banks County High School basketball team has one game left.

Friday night in Homer is going to be big for the Leopards, as they host the regular season closer against East Jackson.

Once Banks gets through with East Jackson, the Leopards can turn their attention to the region tournament next week. With a 5-7 region record and currently on track for the third seed in the tourney, Bank’s position will be decided by the North Oconee versus Jefferson game on Friday.

If North Oconee defeats Jefferson, North Oconee would bump Banks to the fourth seed. If Jefferson can perform and knock off North Oconee, Banks will hold onto the third seed.

This Friday is also Senior Night for Banks County, and between the Lady Leopards’ game and the Leopards’ game a ceremony will be held to honor the seniors. Banks County senior boys are Kasey Hudgins, Lyn Hester and Ryan Griffin.

Tip-off on Friday is at 8:30 p.m. following the girls game at 7:30 p.m.

The Banks County Lady Leopards are fighting for a place in the region tournament.

With three games left in the season, Banks County has one option available – win.

The do or die game came Tuesday as the Lady Leopards hosted Oglethorpe County.

“If we beat Oglethorpe,” coach Jerry King said, “we are guaranteed the third seed [in the region tournament].”
