Devan Espinosa was the top dog for the Winder-Barrow High School wrestling program this season.

The 125-pound competitor earned a top eight finish at the Class AAAA state meet last week at the Gwinnett Arena. Espinosa’s run at state was catapulted by a first-round pin against Stephen Plante of Starrs Mill, the No. 2 seed.

As the final seconds ticked away in Saturday’s quarterfinal game in the Region 8-AAAA tournament, all Winder-Barrow High School coach Eli Connell could do was watch.

Connell watched as the final moments slipped away on what had been a memorable season including a subregion championship. Now it had come to a crashing end with an 82-73 loss to fourth seeded Loganville, at home no less. [Full Story »] 

Despite a furious second half rally, the Winder-Barrow High School Lady Bulldoggs fell short in their bid to advance to the state tournament Friday night.

The WBHS girls fell 57-54 to Loganville in the quarterfinals of the Region 8-AAAA tournament in which the winner was guaranteed a spot at state. Trailing by seven points after the third quarter and by double digits in the contest, the Lady Doggs forced overtime on a three-pointer by Lauren Hamel with 15 seconds left in regulation.

LHS outscored WBHS 5-2 in the extra four minute session, however, to advance. See next week's edition of the Barrow Journal for a complete region tournament update.

The Winder-Barrow High School Lady Bulldoggs stormed out of the starting gate Tuesday night against county rival Apalachee in the opening round of the Region 8-AAAA tournament and then held off a second half rally by the Lady Wildcats to advance.

Coach Brenda Hill’s squad recorded a 61-47 victory to advance to Friday’s second round contest against Loganville at 7 p.m. That game, as will all remaining region tournament contests, will be at WBHS.
