JCCHS second in area, heads for state

The Mat Panthers of Jackson County will be heading to Macon this weekend after earning a berth in the AAA State Duals Tournament.

Jackson County went 7-1 in the 8-AAA Area Duals over the weekend at Oconee County High School to finish second, sending the team to the state competition this Friday and Saturday at the Macon Centerplex.

“All year long I have been telling the team to keep their head up and keep working hard and it will pay off and it did in a big way this weekend,” said coach Jason Powers. “We had our two must win matches of the tournament on Friday night and we performed very well as a team.” [Full Story »]

Sawyer takes Shriners Bowl at Lanier

As the temperature dropped Sunday night, the heat was on the track as 18 Pro-Late Models did battle in the Ice Cold Shriners Bowl at Lanier National Speedway.

With two laps left, Braselton’s Shane Sawyer made the pass on leader Greg Simpson, and held him off after a late caution to take the win.

After starting on the outside of the front row for the 100 lap feature, Sawyer moved out to an early lead, while NASCAR Sprint Cup driver David Ragan made an early charge inside the top ten after starting seventh. [Full Story »]

Lady Panthers move into region play

It was another solid week for the Lady Panthers of Jackson County, as they split their last two games with a win over Johnson and a loss to Stephens County

Next up for the Lady Panthers is a home stand against Oconee County in region action.

Going into action on Tuesday, neither team had recorded a region win so far in the season. The Lady Panthers have a statistical advantage over the Lady Warriors, having scored 382 points to Oconee’s 290, and having allowed only 303 points to their 408. [Full Story »]

Lady Eagles Travel To Fannin Co. Friday

The East Jackson Lady Eagles continue to look for traction as they move into the heart of their region schedule.
So far, the new year has not been as good as East Jackson had hoped, as the Lady Eagles dropped two last week to Union County and Dawson County.

The Eagles hope to turn things around Friday at Fannin County. Tip-off is at 7:00.

That could prove to be a tall order, as the Lady Rebels hit the court with an 8-6 overall record, and undefeated in the region. East Jackson is 4-9 overall, and winless in the region.

Jefferson defeats Banks Co. for area dual title

Mat Dragons travel to Macon Friday

The first step for the Jefferson Mat Dragons is complete, as they picked up the 8-AA region duals champion title at East Jackson Saturday, edging Banks County, East Jackson and Dawson County.

Jefferson first defeated Dawson County in the semi-finals, and then defeated Banks County for the top honor.

Jefferson now prepares to move to Macon this weekend to try to add another state dual championship to their trophy case. [Full Story »]

CHS Lady Tigers Have To Work Together, Face Prince Ave. Friday

After what is being called a “terrible” week by coach Eddie McCurley, the Commerce Lady Tigers have a long road ahead of them.

Last week’s return to the courts after the Christmas break did not go well. The Lady Tigers dropped both the Social Circle game on Tuesday and the Friday game against Lakeview.

This week they faced Athens Academy on Tuesday. Results from that game were unavailable at press time. On Friday, Commerce will host Prince Avenue at 7 p.m.

The Lady Tigers also continue their trek into the heart of the region schedule on Saturday when they travel to Athens Christian. Tip-off is at 5 p.m.

McCurley said on Monday, “All three of the games this week are winnable, but not if we play like we did against Lakeview.”
With Commerce entering the heart of region competition, McCurley was less than thrilled with the performance displayed during last week.

Mat Tigers Advance To State Duals

The Commerce High School grapplers had a good showing at last week’s Area Duals, where the team took a second-place finish behind Wesleyan.

With the second place victory, Commerce advances to this weekend’s State Duals in Macon. Commerce’s first opponent is Gordon Lee. The Mat Tigers’ coach Kendall Love said that Gordon Lee is going to be a tough opponent.

“In my mind they are the probably the best team in that area,” said Love. “They lost to the number one (team) by four points.”

Gresham leads AHS to victory

Chaun Gresham poured in 27 points and had 17 rebounds as Apalachee High School defeated Winder-Barrow 67-60 Friday in subregion play.

John Ansley added 12 points for the Wildcats who outscored the Bulldoggs 19-12 in the game's final eight minutes. Jodd Maxey led WBHS with 21 points while Shun Thurmond added 18 points as the county rivals played before a packed house at AHS.

Mimi Hill scored 19 points and pulled down 15 rebounds as the Winder-Barrow High School Lady Bulldoggs defeated county rival Apalachee 54-37 Friday night. Brittany Witt added 12 points for WBHS.

Kelsey Montgomery paced the Lady Wildcats with 17 points.

Grapplers take 1st at Georgia/Carolina Classic

For the past two weeks, the Banks County Mat Leopards have had it easy with only practice to worry about, but the grapplers jumped back into action last Saturday at the Georgia/Carolina Classic at Hart County.

The Big Blue wrestlers was one of approximately 16 teams competing in the tournament. Kasey Hanley, BCHS wrestling coach, said that historically, the Mat Leopards have competed very well at Hart County, and this year was no exception.

The Jan. 3 match began 2009 for the team, and with Banks taking the win; the season is looking in good shape as the wrestlers prepare for Area Duals this weekend.

Region rival East Jackson hosts this weekend’s Area Duals, where Banks will compete against the Mat Eagles and wrestling powerhouse Jefferson. The duals begin on Friday at East Jackson.

Banks County hosted its first home match of the new year on Tuesday against Towns County, Franklin County and West Hall. Results were unavailable at press time
