Bulldoggs play region champs tough

The Loganville High School football team won the Region 8-AAAA title Friday night at W. Clair Harris Stadium, but the Winder-Barrow Bulldoggs made them earn it.

The visiting Red Devils took a 19-7 win in a steady rain which moved into the area before kickoff and fell throughout the contest. The rain hampered both teams offensively, but the defense shined for both squads.

For the Apalachee High School football team, two words sum it all up: “playoff time.”

The Wildcats are still practicing this week after week 10 of the regular season. It’s the goal of every high school football team in the state. For the third consecutive season, coach Shane Davis’ team is among this elite group.

Fleeman Overcomes Setbacks, Wins World Crown

Sunday’s World Crown at Peach State Speedway in Jefferson will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the greatest come from behind victories in the event’s storied 25-year history.

After losing a lap a quarter of the way through the 200 lap event, Russell Fleeman charged back, using the cunning and skill of a veteran driver, and won the crown, the trophy and the check that had eluded him in several tries over the years.

Cross Country Eagles place in Elite Eight at State

Both East Jackson cross country teams performed well enough to reach the elite eight teams last weekend at state competition in Carrollton.

The girls finished seventh out of 35 schools, while the boys finished eighth of 35 schools.

Sherri Blalock finished third out of 82 runners with a national elite time of 19:55, setting a new school record for East Jackson. Blalock also made the All-State team.

Three Panthers named to All Region team

Three Jackson County football players have been named to the 2008 Region 8-AAA All Region team.

Offensive lineman Ben Brown, defensive end Ryan Howe and cornerback Charlie Waycaster were named on Monday to the team. [Full Story »]

The Jefferson Dragons made some more history Friday night.

For the first time in the team’s 60-year history, they have gone undefeated in regular season play after crushing the East Jackson Eagles 48-0 in the rain.

The closest Jefferson had come previously to an undefeated regular season was back in 1973, when coach Jim Lofton’s team went 9-1, losing their last game of the season to arch rival Commerce 28-3. [Full Story »] 

Panthers close season with loss to Indians

The Jackson County Panthers were hoping for a little luck Friday night to give them at least one region win on the season, and a high note on which to end their rollercoaster 2008.

They got neither, as the Stephens County Indians trampled the Panthers offense to win 35-0.

That gave Jackson County a final season tally of 0-7 in the region, and 1-8-1 overall, having defeated Our Lady of Mercy to open the season back on Aug. 29, and having tied Prince Avenue Christian on Sept. 19. [Full Story »]
