Jefferson versus Commerce Friday

The Jefferson High School Gridiron Dragons put on a show last Thursday evening while hosting a scrimmage game against Morgan County.

Before the game head coach Bill Navas told the team that he wanted them to have a good time and to cut loose and have fun during the game.

Jefferson, who is in AA classification this year, hosted the AAA school as a prelude to the excitement of the season opener against rival Commerce.

These cross county rivals are playing only for pride this year after Jefferson moved up to 8-AA. Speculations have surfaced that the Commerce team is playing to a disadvantage due to the size of some of the players. Speculation aside, Jefferson does appear to have a marked advantage in speed and the adaptability to fill positions when needed.

Lady Dragons continue winning streak

The Lady Dragons have played a number of matches including a win over Gainesville 25-22, 25-11 and a win last Thursday against Greene County 25-15, 25-15.

The Jefferson team played Buford and East Hall on Tuesday.
The Lady Dragons fell to Buford, 15-25, 22-25, but rebounded to overcome East Hall 25-21, 25-12.

The next match for the Lady Dragons is against Athens Christian and Lakeview Academy on Thursday.

Dragons play Morgan Co. in scrimmage

The Jefferson Dragons faced off against the Morgan County Bulldogs Thursday night in Jefferson.

The meeting allowed the JHS coaching staff a chance to see how some of the players will perform in the season opener against in county rival Commerce.

JHS off to a winning start

The Jefferson High School ladies’ volleyball team is off to an acceptable start, at least according to the coach.
The Lady Dragons opened against Madison County in a scrimmage on August 12. Jefferson won three of the four games against the AAAA school. The final scores were: 25-14, 25-22, 22-25 and 25-16.

Jefferson then traveled over to East Jackson to compete in the East Jackson play date on Saturday. Ending with a 2-2 match record the team was exhausted by the end of the day.

Head volleyball coach Michael Paul said that this was the first chance some of the girls had to play in four matches in one day and the girls were mentally fatigued. [Full Story »]

The Jefferson Lady Dragons’ softball team swept Commerce Tuesday evening.

While the game doesn’t count for anything more than bragging rights, the 10-0 win keeps the Jefferson team pumped as their season is still kicking off.

Jefferson faced the Lady Tigers in Commerce and a crowd of fans for each team also turned out. The Lady Dragons were quick to not disappoint.

Lady Dragons win scrimmage against Lions

Jefferson’s Lady Dragons opened the softball season in a dramatic fashion going into extra innings Tuesday night.

The scrimmage game against Franklin County was the time for the Lady Dragons to work out the nerves of a new season.

Head coach Brad Puckett said that the scrimmage game wasn’t pretty, but Jefferson took the victory. [Full Story »] 

Dragons ready for historic opener, Aug. 29

The Jefferson Dragons are ready to set another date in the history books.

August 29 will not only mark the opening of another season of Jefferson football, but it will represent another piece of Dragon history.

For the first time, Jefferson opens its season by playing host to its in-county rivals, the Commerce Tigers. It marks the first time for each team that they’ve opened against the other since the series started back in 1947. Normally, the teams face each other later in the year, in late October or early November. [Full Story »] 

Practicing in the heat

“We are hot,” Jefferson head coach Bill Navas said. “Not cool, but hot.”

Whether Navas is referring to the weather, or to the team, as well, remains to be seen. The Jefferson Dragons are on the field, sweating and getting ready for the first kickoff of the 2008 football season.

Jefferson started practices Friday afternoon. According to Navas there are not any star players, yet, but as the team gets more practices in before the first game that is sure to change. The Dragons have moved up into 8-AA this season and will face Morgan County in a scrimmage game August 21. The opener for the team is against rival Commerce in what is sure to be a big game.

Navas said, about playing Commerce, “After playing in that game, we have played in any big game. It is a benefit for both schools.”

Until that first game, the Dragons will be out practicing in the heat to be ready to go under the lights.
