Last week was a good one for the Lady Dragons of Jefferson as they picked up wins against Mountain View and Commerce.
Up next is a trip to Oglethorpe County to face the Lady Patriots on Friday.
Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
Mountain View
The Lady Dragons began their week by playing host to the Lady Bears of Mountain View.
Jefferson hit the court with a lot of intensity, holding the Lady Bears to only 10 points in the first half to carry a 26-10 lead into the half.
Mountain View would fare better in the second half, tacking on 27 points to their total. But the Lady Dragons added 29 points in the second half to move away to a 55-37 victory.
Skylar Evanson and Rachel Goza led Jefferson in scoring with 14 points each. Erin Knight scored nine points. Bethany Whitlock scored eight. Goza had eight rebounds on the night. Stephanie Fincher had seven.
“We came out with a lot of intensity and I thought we really got after them defensively,” said coach Jason Gibson. “We tried to take away their guards as we felt that was the strength of their team and we were able to do that. We kept them from getting into any kind of rhythm offensively. We really tried to keep them guessing.
“I thought it was one of our better games offensively as well. We really played well together. We kept the ball moving and really did a good job of attacking them inside out. I thought it was a great team effort and I’m very proud of our girls.”
Jefferson was next slated to host Banks County in their region opener on Friday, but that game was postponed due to winter weather conditions.
Commerce
The Lady Dragons traveled to Commerce on Saturday to face the Lady Tigers in the latest meeting of the two rivals.
Jefferson moved out to an early advantage, holding the Lady Tigers to only four points in the first period and leading 13-4 at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Dragons would pad their lead in the second
quarter while holding Commerce to 10 points, giving them a 31-14 advantage at the half.
Jefferson would continue to control the game in the second half, taking a 42-20 lead out of the third quarter. In the fourth, the Lady Dragons held Commerce to only one point while adding 10 to their score to bring home a 52-21 victory.
“I thought our kids played extremely hard defensively against Commerce,” Gibson said. “We started out a little slow offensively as I think the kids were excited and had a lot of emotions early on. Once they settled down and we got into a rhythm offensively I thought we played well on both ends of the floor.”
Bethany Whitlock led Jefferson in scoring with 15 points. Stephanie Fincher scored 10. Jakeia Wilson and Erin Knight scored nine each. Stephanie Fincher and Rachel Goza had seven rebounds each.
