Jefferson wins at Winder-Barrow, Habersham County

It was a successful New Year’s break for the Mat Dragons of Jefferson, as they wrapped up some time off of school with wins at Winder-Barrow and Habersham Central last week.

First, Jefferson saw in the end of 2009 with a victory in the Winder-Barrow Invitational, scoring 237 points as a team to outdistance Collins Hill with 140, Lumpkin County with 133 and Dacula with 132.

Coach Doug Thurmond said several of his wrestlers stepped up to the challenge, including Isaac Kelley, Jake Sherman, Daniel Barber, Lucas Redd, Forrest Przybysz and Zack Allen.

“(They) did real well,” Thurmond said. “There were some tough teams and some tough individuals at that tournament. It toughened up the tournament as far as being a traditional tournament where everybody had to wrestle in their weight classes.”

Up next was a trip to Habersham County to take part in the Habersham Duals.

The Mat Dragons went 5-0 to win the tournament, defeating Sandy Creek 67-0, Woodward Academy 55-15, North Forsyth 71-6, and Stone Mountain 81-0, then defeating Parkview in the finals 63-10.

“They did very well,” Thurmond said. “We wrestled some very strong individuals.”

Thurmond said momentum was key in the finals against Parkview.

“You kind of get on a roll where the guys get up and they get going, and it’s really tough to stop that kind of momentum,” he said. “We’ve had some real good matches with Parkview over the years and that was a nice victory there.”
