The Lady Dragons of Jefferson picked up their first victory of the season during the holiday break with a victory over North Paulding during the Pickens County tournament last week.
Now they look towards the start of region play, as they will host Banks County at home on Friday.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Jefferson will travel to Commerce to face their in-county rivals, the Lady Tigers on Saturday. Tip-off in that non-region game is slated for 7 p.m.
North Paulding
After losing to Kell in the opening round of tournament play, the Lady Dragons moved on to face North Paulding last Tuesday in the second round of play.
Jefferson took control early, establishing the tempo and moving out to a 24-4 lead by the end of the first quarter.
From there, the Lady Dragons stuck to their rotation and continued to press on and off the rest of the first half. In the second half, Jefferson fell back and played man-to-man, getting several players time on the court. In all, 11 different players saw time with nine scoring as the Lady Dragons went on to win 55-29.
Erin Knight led Jefferson in scoring with 11 points.
“We shot the ball well,” said coach Jason Gibson. “We didn’t shoot well from the free throw line, but it didn’t really reflect in the score.”
“Our kids did a good job of pushing the basketball and created some easy opportunities in transition,” Gibson added. “We were able to knock down some threes, which is something I feel like we’re capable of doing but we just have not shot the ball very well yet as a group.”
Walker County
The Lady Dragons were looking to end their tournament on a high note as they faced the Lady Wolverines of Walker on Wednesday.
Jefferson took control of the game early, leading 16-11 at the end of the first half. Walker would close to within one, 23-22, late in the third, and take the lead just before the end of the quarter, 27-23. The Lady Dragons would hold Walker scoreless through until the last minute of the game. After scoring on free throws, the Lady Wolverines would go on to score on seven of eight free throws down the stretch to win 36-26.
Skylar Evanson led the Lady Dragons with seven points on the game.
