As 2009 draws to an end, there are countless events and moments that will be remembered.
While locally, Banks County may not have such headliners like Brent Favre’s on again – off again retirement, or a Tiger Woods scandal there were plenty of important headlines from high school athletics, recreation sports and other community activities.
Here are some of the top headlines from 2009, presented in no particular order:
BCHS runners finish in top ten
The 2009 cross country season was quite an experience for the Banks County boy’s team.
Banks County’s Leopard runners came away from the region meet in third place, and qualified to compete in the state meet in Carrollton.
According to head coach Kelly McDuffie, the team was very focused on the state goal.
Three area racers make Hall of Fame
Three racers from Banks and Habersham counties were among the “Elite Eight” to be inducted into the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame.
The veteran racecar drivers were among 15 semi-finalists for the 2009 class for the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame in Dawsonville.
New coach leads Lady Leopards to Sweet 16
Building upon the experience the team had gained under the leadership of former coach Josh Lord, Dean Goodwin led the ladies through a winning season, that ended just shy of the Elite Eight as Rockmart took the best in a three game series.
The Lady Leopards had some high expectations to reach as they became accustomed to Goodwin’s style and coaching manner.
